I've found extended family of unknown 2nd great grandfather who fathered my 1st great grandfather born 1859 by using 3 DNA sites. I noticed a certain surname mentioned and constructed a tree after filtering for that surname and doing my own research. The cousins with surname represented several generations. I followed them down until I found individuals who had a close enough geographical position to the woman who became my 2nd great grandmother. Perhaps I made an error in the chosen man or not. Time might tell. Ancestry thru lines attached those other cousins.

So a 4th cousin would be needed to find an unknown 3rd great grandparent?

Thank you. I have tested with Ancestry and MyHeritage (they are dissimilar), and have built family trees with each, though Ancestry is by far my primary tool. I am considering trying 23 & Me, but didn't know about FamilyDNA, I will definitely take a look at them. What I have discovered is my verbal family history matches extremely closely with my genealogical research and my DNA results.

My experience has shown that with enough 2nd and 3rd cousins matches, and good traditional genealogy research techniques, one can identify a candidate. It is of course easier with a first cousin match. Still, one must do the traditional research on the known-parent and identify those matches to have the quickest discoveries and most confidence.

Congratulations on you and your husband's 25 years. In today's world, that is an accomplishment that you two can be proud of. With our 4 boys out of the house, 3 married, one 4 year old grandson and a 4 week old one (can we talk DNA, maybe another son will give a granddaughter?) our priorities have shifted over the years also. Continued success! And we just had our 44th wedding anniversary on Friday.

Hey, thanks for sharing this. It's really great that we can take care of our parents and family. I'm taking care of my elderly mom and brother from a distance, while my sister does the hands-on stuff like you mentioned. It's not easy, but I'd love it if someone could just do it for me in the future. 🙏❤️🙏

Sheila here: I just finished reading your Monday email. Next week my husband and I will become the full-time caretakers of my mother in her home. Your comments today have been aptly timed. thanks for sharing this, it was great info and reflects the way i approach this challenge. unfortunately, ancestry often makes changes that make your own information ever more inaccessible outside of their walled garden, and these constant changes also continually invalidate programmatic tools that help make it easier to access your own information on the ancestry site. their approach might be tolerable if their tools were adequate, but they totally are inadequate. is it just me? i feel great anger whenever spending the many hours required to export information from my own tree and my own dna. and, over the years, i have observed the ever increasing ancrestry lock-down and lock in. i love myheritage tools. where is the ancestry cluster map? where is the ancestry matching segment data? where is the ancestry wato? where are the ancestry dna professionals? how can anyone do professional genealogy with their hands tied behind their backs? and the pro membership? at last we can see how our matches relate to one another, which myheritage has provided free forever! and don't get me started on the constant 30 second screen loads, etc. with ancestry's increasing lock-down, lack of resourcing, and lack of tools, frankly, in my opinion, as they leverage their network effect from a captured market, ancestry has become pretty doggone evil.

Thank you. I've never put too much value in these ethnicity estimates. I've tested at five testing companies and the estimates are all very different. My siblings and I have all tested at Ancestry DNA. Of course our estimates are all different. Or should I take these estimates more seriously? So I know my genealogy on both sides going back at least into the 1700s. So I should receive half of my mother's DNA from her father (German) and half from her mother (Norway)? Or could I receive more Norwegian DNA than German? I ask this because Ancestry DNA has me on the maternal side as 21% Norway, 20 % Sweden so more scandinavian. The rest is 6% French, 2% Germanic, and 1% England and northwestern Europe. Does this make sense? It is possible that my German roots are from Alsace (maybe Switzerland earlier) and history does tell us Swedish troops occupied parts of Alsace during the 30 years war -- could be the explanation? My siblings did not all get the Swedish DNA. Of course I'm mainly using my cousin matches to find clues about my ancestors and my German origins, which is my brick wall. I do get many matches with Swiss, Alsatian and Palatinate ancestors in their family trees but haven't been able to find records and documents to prove anything. 🤕 So I'm looking ancestors beyond my 3rd great grandparents with is a challenge (I think you agree).

Please help! In Wikitree. There are people, they brag about their Phds and all. Keep telling me I am not a real genealogist. I have been working on my family tree stuff for a long time. I have been able to work off of what has been handed down from generations going way back. There is one part of my family tree that someone puts in this big long spill about DNA, because they have DNA connecting two or three people, the other people in this family tree they don't have DNA matches for or something about they are not part of some certain DNA group. These people will tear that/my family tree apart. Adding other people, deleting people, and so on. It is like they use the DNA as a way to bully me out of certain parts of my family tree so they can twist their family tree into it. My question is how can it be 100% positive there are DNA matches for people 200 plus years ago? My understanding is that DNA is only as good as the data that is reported, such as family histories.

This is such GREAT news. FTDNA gives tests you can’t get anywhere else. But I agree that their “family tree” feature is REALLY lacking!!!!! And allot of people there have no trees at all, even after taking the Big Y 700. Or the mitrocondial test. So frustrating to so many. Hopefully more people will build out at least a small tree because of this. Fingers crossed!…..8-)

 @YourDNAGuide My closest match is 1862 cm and 27% , with the longest segment of 180 cm on the paternal side. Does this mean that the woman is my half sister? I just found out that the man who I thought was my father for over 60 years is not.. (Me and my supposed half brother took an ancestory test and did not match.This woman I close match with had two brothers and a father who all had a baby girl in the same year period that I was born. So my mother slept with the brothers or the father. She is staying mumon the subject(pun intended).
@YourDNAGuide
@YourDNAGuide Ай бұрын
Looking at DNA Painter you could probably cross off grandparent and grandchild. However, while half sibling could be very possible there are other possibilities. You are solidly in the right family, can you test any children of the brothers? Doing genealogy have you traced where all those baby girls ended up from those men? Half Sibling is likely if Ancestry says Paternal and not Both Sides. However, this creates a very sensitive situation. Before making contact with anyone, I recommend closely analyzing all matches in the shared matches group to see what relationships are supported with them. As I said, there is always more than one possibility - like possible multiple relationships to a 1C. Transferring or testing to other companies could reveal more key matches. And a coaching call to review theories would be a good double check. www.yourdnaguide.com/coach You may want to consider joining a support group for herself after discovering her NPE we have a blogpost with a link to one on Facebook called NPE Friends. www.yourdnaguide.com/support-resources
