Dave Chappelle in Trading Spouses scares me tremendously. Nick Cannon whiteface posting makes me fear all black people. It's kind of racism is going to stop.

I think you can tell she wasn't feeling this at all. It's so sad how she was forced to do this. But I know the black community (as well as the LGBTQ community) love her for what she went on to do. She had privilege and she used it to make other people's lives better.

It’s not like she had a choice. It’s not like this was her idea. She was only 15 here… studio’s told you what to do - especially when you’re that young and just starting out. I’m positive as she grew older and realized what she had done, she was embarrassed with shame.

Knowing Judy Garland's history with the studio system in Hollywood, she had no choice but to do what they wanted her to do, as she was "under contract." Back then, this type of racial "entertainment" was commonplace, but it still doesn't make it right. As another person commented, Judy was a staunch supporter of the Civil Rights movement and racial equality. Yes, seeing her in blackface singing what is labeled as the "Black American National Anthem" is shocking and disturbing, but IMHO, it's also an opportunity to expose the blatant racism of that period in time and start a dialogue about the way Judy and numerous other actors were abused and exploited. Rest In Peace, Judy. Lord knows you deserve peace after the life you had. 😢

This is racist just in the snowflake country called USA, the people in the rest of the smart countries, we dont care. We wasnt brainwashed to think that using a disguise is an offense. That is a dellusion and invention your not so smart ancestors tried to teach you. Every race has enslaved people of every other race, and using a disguise wont make you racist because for being racist begore you need to believe that races are real (AND THEY ARE NOT). IF YOU THINK USING A DISGUISE IS RACIST BECAUSE ITS IMITATING A RACE AND MAKING IT LESS VALUABLE, YOU ARE THE RACIST.

As a black person, looking past all the obvious racism; this was an amazing performance. And yeah yeah, before yall call me a traitor, yall have to do your research. She didn’t even want to do this scene but was forced by the studio under contract and her mother who forced her to sign it. She was terrified by what her black friends would think of her which is a crazy thing to worry about as a kid. She later went on to be a passionate supporter of the civil rights movement once she got old enough to gain some autonomy. Not everything is as it appears.

It was a different time.. This is just what was done. You weren't going to have black people on film. Period. So if you wanted that representation at all you got white actors.. acting. And hollywood being as super exaggerated as it was.. poof.. racist stereotype. But that's why context is important. After WWII it rapidly became much less accepted and disappeared pretty much altogether in the 1980s.
