I knew that............I was dating a lady who had Sicilian heritage and in 1992 we were in Cali visited some her family and I met her Aunt who was born in the States but her father was from Sicily and had immigrated only a few years before she was born. Her Aunt was very knowledgeable on the history of Sicily and her family history so during our conversation I bought up the subject how Sicily had been invaded by so many nations in the last 1000 yrs including some from Africa and that's how they got there darker completion and her Aunt totally agreed with me and was surprised I even knew that....I used to be avid reader. Anyway, I had mention the same thing to my now ex at the time and she never believed me but now with her Aunt backing up my story she believes it.......after we left she told me never to say that in front of her son, NEVER!! Her son was in his mid 20's just out of the army and a good kid but just a little racist. True Story.............

If you’re talking about re-creating a certain period in history, which Cimino was, there was a precedent that he could’ve followed. This was once upon a time in the west. Sergio Leone managed to make that epic western without becoming incoherent and spending billions of dollars.

Why? Why do they show a clipped image of the letter sent to the cast about reasons the film didn't get a mainstream showing? Move it over an inch and we don't have to wonder. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZKrgp-ph7OlbNU

I rarely see a documentary I would call a classic, but here we have it. Betwenn them James Ellroy and Edddie Muller do the business, which is what? They make the LA of film noire to be corrupt and a destroyer of dreams , but also fantastically attractive so that the victims keep on coming, not in ignorance but knowing their fate.

The Matrix is seriously one of the few things in my lifetime that I say from the heart to younger people, "you HAD to be there".

I was introduced to the matrix and I remember not saying a word just being mesmerized. The friend I was with saw it already and my only prejudice about what the movie was about is that he said he was really into conspiracy theories. I had seen nothing about it before I saw it. No previews or commercials

The Matrix came out when I was in sixth grade, never got to see it in theaters but my parents rented the VHS for me and said I gotta watch it (even though it was rated R and that was usually a no-go at the time). Still blew me away.

I have come to the conclusion this movie was subconsciously about molestation. Donny had been and saw his little sister would be next and he had to do what it took to stop it.

It’s hard to blame cimino for what happened. It was like giving someone a free shopping spree. The executives should have been more tough in the beginning like they were when Cimino shot the graduation scene

the TV spots maybe but the fact that there was a WEBSITE just for the movie and it basically said nothing but the date of the movie, that was pretty exciting in 1999. my high school english teacher points at the computer screen while we're supposed to be doing school and he goes "did you see this?" it was really anticipated. no social media at all, somehow you had to be shown this website by someone else

Friedkin is a legend but this is not a good behavior from a great artist. Also this argument is dumb until we reach 30 years later and then we can talk about Drive and its relevancy.

Cimino was purposefully destroyed by the rise of extremist right-wing political forces at the dawn of the Reagan era whose ruthless agenda was to permanently turn Hollywood overnight into a controlling and controlled Corporate Ministry Of Escapist Propaganda. He was a titanic genius, whose artistic greatness was so immense and so immediate, that the overwhelming power of his two epic critiques of America's imperialist evil essentially outdid even the formidable masterpieces of all of his equally brilliant peers of the 1970's "New Hollywood" Movement. The critics fell in line because that is what they were told to do to save their jobs. It was a direct political imperative. When you watch "Heaven's Gate" in 2024, you will see a towering and unapologetically savage work of art that was crucified along with the assassination of its martyred director for no other reason than the film cut right down to the bloody bones of everything that to this very day is the perpetual lies and historic cover-ups of Manifest Destiny and the toxic illusions of a nation's false egalitarianism. He was blessed that he lived to see the passionate European vindication. But one's heart breaks nonetheless.
