They do this almost all night this time of year at my house. It's funny because a untrained ear can easily mistake it for a sound that Jack rabbits/hares make. When I first moved to the thick forest I heard this and was investigating, thinking it was a hare... I just happened to get close enough to be able to tell the sound was coming from up in the trees. I pointed my bright spot light into the tree and yup, it was an owl, different shades of brown almost in a lateral like pattern of lines. There's at least two other species of owl here, one is very big, it's awesome to see them hunt on a full moon after a fresh snow. They are like silent stealth bombers, one flew directly over my head one time and I happened to look up because the owl must have been perched somewhere above me and I had heard it take flight then glide down and caught a hare. I thought someone was messing with me when I herd the stereo typical "whooo, whoooo", I was like "oh come on, owls don't actually make a 'who?' Sound.... we'll, lol, they sure do I found out.

Wait. Is that an older one? We thought they were screech owls! We didn't know [at first] what was making this sound! It starts low and then goes up. Dragging the high pitch out with a breath. But it looks far different from this one, that's for sure. That is why we thought it was screech owl. It's been doing this every night, for the past month now. It sounds like a distress call. It has just let us walk right up to it when we finally found it by following its call. We don't know why they showed up suddenly. And we realized there are two now. For sure the one is darker and seems smaller until it flies. Its wingspan makes its size mich bigger! It also has dark eyes. The eay it blinks its eyes adds to its cuteness! Why would they keep making this distress sounding call all throughout the night? And so super close to a human habitat?

Thank you for posting this little piece, it proves at night my owl does cry when hunting being high pitch shrill. Even spooking him makes two very distinctive high pitch screams.

We’ve had a breeding pair of barred owls on our property since about 2020. I’ve always heard this shrill screeching noise at night for a few months out of the year, I just assumed it was a mockingbird getting pissed at the owls, then one night I saw a TON of babies fly off while screeching and mom was nearby. I had no clue they sounded like that!
