I know it all depends on each project, but I'm finding footage these days mostly is being turned over to VFX already in linear (usually ACEScg EXR's), then we do the work in linear, and return linear to editorial. I like that, as think it minimizes any potential for colourspace mistakes happening. With log plates we have to linearise and return to log as part of the VFX process which is an added element. What's your take on it? Do you prefer receiving log plates?
@PDeNigris19 күн бұрын
Things are still a little all over the place for us. Some clients turn over in linear, some in log, and some of our indie folks need guidance on how to turn material over. Sort of depends if we're working with a post house or a DIY filmmaker who is their own editor and colorist. Would be lovely to have a standard but it's a little difficult to push everyone into the same workflow.

Under "quality of life" I've been saved several times by having a pay-as-you go MiFi hotspot device. Definitely may be overkill for a lot of people...but one of the times it was the MVP for me was when I had to do a FaceTime call between producers and another supe back at the office...and we were in a location that was spotty signal wise.

The chrome ball might be redundant but I presume the Grey ball is still pretty useful?
@PDeNigrisАй бұрын
Sure, but in my experience I'm seeing people either use both the chrome and gray balls together, or none at all. I generally still use both, plus the 360, which gives me redundancy and a way to doublecheck everything on the back end. My CG team can use the 360 HDR to light the CG and if there's ever a doubt about matching they can drop in a gray sphere to confirm it matches the one we captured on set. I could definitely see a scenario where I'm no longer capturing the chrome sphere but right now if I have lugged it to set with me I may as well get it in front of the camera.

I'd probably also add in a tablet of some kind for on set note taking. I use android so I don't have access to this, but I hear the shotbot app is pretty useful for this kinda thing.

First of all Thank you Mr. Paul for sharing this valuable information, I myself also a VFX arist and VFX trainer working from last 14 years, and I must say this episode is so much important and crucial for the VFX artist and the trainers to understand the key jobs in VFX. Session like this motivates us that we are working on the right path

Colorist with a background in VFX here. Very good video, very nicely explained. I wish more VFX artists would think about handing over alphas to the colorist. I get it for translucent elements like smoke or fire a matte sometimes doesn't really work or is hard to create. But let's face it, most of the daily work is usually TV-Inserts and those always need some tweaking in the color suite. You wouldn't believe how many unnecessary discussions we had with VFX vendors about mattes. So thanks for educating people on that!

This is good to know. I don’t think I’ve ever really thought about the order. I vaguely recall us getting VFX done first then color grading done; it’s been some years. I’ll refer to this in the future because you lost me at mattes and LUTs.

I would add this. Be smart, work with ACES and OCIO and always test your chain before any real production.

Good video! More indie filmmakers need to understand how this works. I work in VFX production as a matte artist, and working closely with the Colorist is key to making sure your work fits seamlessly into the final film, without wasting a lot of effort by delivering final shots and having your work destroyed in the DI suite because you didn't know how the coloring would effect your shot(s). (Yes, I speak from painful experience)

Only time I had a fake prop gun on set, I kept it on my person at all times for the one scene it was in - lying next to a body. There’s even a BTS photo of it in the back of my pants. We were low budget so I was going to be the only person in charge of it. After it was put away in the back of my trunk. And I think it’s a good idea for actors to take a shooting course if their role requires handling a gun. I’ve only gone shooting a few times, and their reaction to recoil (vs no reaction) would be more believable. Good topic. Looking forward to more episodes.

If the light is orange what is the best way to match that. I did a small rotopaint on a frame hold for a locked off camera but the lighting will not match when I apply the curvetool to the rotoPaint pipe. I know I’m missing something simple just can’t find the issue.

My guess is you have not linked the RGB channels on your grade node. Likely your grade still has a unified gain knob instead of separate channels. If you separate the channels you'll get the color you're looking for.

I literally did look at the title after all the Heat love, wondering if I missed that in the title. But I did like that Frank (Ziti now in my head forever) said ‘If you’re doing an independent project, treat it that way. Not as a Hollywood project.’ And then the talk about folks being real people and not be a jerk in expecting certain things.

I appreciate the love on the short film! In regards to the stadium, I figured if it got to the point where they reach out, that means the video is doing it's thing and we could address it at that time. Also, we're not putting it in a bad light so I felt that wouldn't make it a hot subject.

Thanks! I know some people have had decent luck with Fiverr, and there a groups on social media like Facebook and LinkedIn with names like "I need VFX" etc. and those can be pretty good. Most of our clients come from word of mouth and in-person networking at film festivals and other events.

Regarding Geordi restoring the Enterprise D. I think it's safe to say he wasn't restoring it by himself but rather working with a team at the Fleet Museum. Also there was some question as to how he got it off of Veridian 3 but that was answered in the episode. Starfleet removed it due to the Prime Directive. Understandable David would be confused though as he said he hasn't yet watched the full episodes. I think it was explained adequately enough in episode.
