Is there an offset on that wheel ?
@chiefswanderlust2974
@chiefswanderlust2974 Ай бұрын
Offset is typically when the wheel in mounted on the bike. So I think you are referring to the hub and rim centering. From my research, the hub is centered within the rim on these models.

The methods you are using won’t work as the spoke in some area will have stretched.

I was able to get the lateral and vertical runout to 0.9mm, which is within BMW specs. So the method does work. However, it is an interesting thought; I wonder how much the spokes have stretched. Perhaps in a future video we can test it.

Thanks for posting your videos on this topic. The spreadsheet is a good idea, I created one very similar and it is helpful to visualize! I failed to get some insight into how these wheels behave after watching this video, though. Now that you have spent so much time with them, do you have a cliff notes summary on how they behave? I have seem the same thing, where I want to nudge the wheel a certain direction at a certain spoke. But it appears that by adjusting the tension at the problem area seems to do next to nothing. As you showed with your missing spoke #16 example, the impact is almost 180 deg away. But even after mapping everything out with the spreadsheet I have been unable to "Crack the code" on how to move the rim a certain direction, at a certain spoke area. Do you have any updates now that you have had some months to recover from this exercise?

I haven't cracked the code yet. However there was some advice given that will be covered in a future video. Think triangles... Wherever the deviation is, the triangle of spokes around that area and the ones opposite may be the key. Again, not sure yet, need to test it. Thanks for watching! Very much appreciated.

For a novice, would you recommend the TruSpoke tool as a good starting point? Or do you think that a very accurate torque wrench could get you similar or better results? I have an Aprilia Tuareg with X-Spoke wheels, and I made some mistakes and got the front wheel very out of true. So now I have loosened all spoked and the rim does appear to be fine but I am trying to decide how to proceed if I should buy the TruSpoke tool, or get a more accurate torque wrench as all I have is a CDI 2-8Nm torque wrench. Cheers from Portland, OR. Thanks!

A torque wrench and the TruSpoke tool are completely different tools. The TruSpoke takes a measurement with the spoke and spoke nipple. This gets the hub centered within the rim. The torque wrench is used for ensuring everything is tightened correctly. For a novice, I think the TruSpoke is a great tool. I couldn't have got this far without it.

Cool video...thank you...I have a 2022 R1250GS...love spoked wheels and have some experience with them...the spoke length on these wheels is about 187mm...front and rear...pulling and pushing spokes...all the same length...since BMW does not provide service manual, I am not able to locate what the torque setting is...I was told by a BMW certified mechanic that it should be 2.5 N/m...but another BMW mechanic from another shop gave me a higher value...do you know what the max torque value is for spokes on these wheels?
@chiefswanderlust2974
@chiefswanderlust2974 5 ай бұрын
Per the service manual , the first tightening torque is 0.9Nm, The 2nd tightening torque is 4Nm. The grub screw is tightened to 1.9Nm. These numbers are from the 2019 manual but I don't think they would have changed.

i thought your video very long winded, and choice of tools poor, when testing a wheel, find out what spokes are tight and what spokes are slack, play like a hard tight high note and slack low note, once that has been verified, mark them if you wish, then you could proceed the way you you are demonstrating, in the video. i said the choice of tools was poor, to use a Torx or Allen key make sure it is long enough to get your adjusting hand out of the wheel, the length of the tool might be 8 to 10 inches, in length, you also failed to mention the stupid grub screws that bmw added to stop the nipples undoing them self's, in all my years of repairing this type of wheel, some are good and a lot are not. the main flat area is on the weld, unless you get a good one do not thy to rectify the shallow flat as the weld had been ground off. the tyre will compensate the difference. i noticed on your checking you always went for the are where the rim had highest deviation or high spot, this can be caused by a loose spoke on the other side, again listen to the spoke tension sound, and , an old saying i had, was think twice and turn once, in these wheels think get a different bike. A perfect spoke wheel spokes are triangulated and that is the perfect way to build and tension a wheel, however the BMW when they cross in the middle create two triangles and one works against you. technical data for this wheel is available, but you would find the usa book on ufo activity easier. i have repaired in my years a lot of these wheels and some times it all happens in the final torqueing, of the wheel spoke nipples, don't forget your offsets, you can do all this work and the wheel with type on wont fit the forks or catches the drive tube. Most motorcycle manufactures, have bad wheels in their history, some starting from the 1930's AJS, BSA, Triumph, and Norton where some of the worst offenders, i don't care what owners might think or object, if they were wheel builders, they would understand the problems but with this style of wheel BMW took the worst wheel award for all time. i priced a wheel for a job i had in my shop the other day, the replacement cost was £1100, for a wheel next day delivery, a rim on its own £400, 7-10 days delivery, only one rim sold last year in the UK last year, and i fitted it. they didn't say how many bikes are being written off because of damaged wheel rims, but if the wheel forks and a few bits of bodywork is damaged the bike is scrap. Have fun, i have over my lifetime in building wheels, oh by the way the cast wheels fitted to BMW are just as bad they, are prone to crack, upon impacting with potholes,, a 5mm flat in the rim edge can crack a wheel around the spoke, also my latest repair i discovered the wheel impacted on the welded area, it moving the dent out was easy the rim welded edge moved and had to be rewelded again. Low profile tyres cause more wheel damage than you realise. i have over 130,000 wheels built or repaired in my lifetime, and i retiring soon.

You are almost correct. It's true I don't know what I'm doing. This was an experiment. As stated in the comments, I have never worked on a rim before and this isn't an instructional video. Per the BMW Service Manual (Section 36 31 511) for a 2019 R1250GS, max lateral and vertical runout is 1.7mm. This rim was 3.7mm when I started, and 0.9mm when finished. This video was really about showing what can be completed for a beginner. The very basic steps. And that with patience, you can get there.

BMW Specs are in NM. But yes, at about the 33 minute mark, I'm using a "Prestacycle Mini TorqKeys Preset Torque Tool". It's preset to 3nm, so I'm able to ensure that everything is very close to the max BMW spec of 4nm. I also have the 4nm version. When you get to this point of truing a wheel, a tiny adjustment can have a big impact. So using the torque tool along with 1/8 or 1/4 turn increments is the only way to go.

Very helpful video. Thanks. Would you share how to get the tool to measure the length of the spoke or grub screw? The one that you insert into the nipple
@chiefswanderlust2974
@chiefswanderlust2974 11 ай бұрын
The grub screws are removed prior this process, so they are not part of the measurement. When the grub screw is out, the tool will measure from the end of the spoke to the working tip of the T40 bit. The TruSpoke tool comes with a T40 bit that has a hole in the middle. This allows a small needle to pass from the tool through the bit and onto the end of the spoke nipple. Does that help? If not, I can upload a better video of exactly what the TruSpoke tool does.

Greetings from Germany to everyone. From many years of experience in lacing and truing wheels you will come to a point (probably by 5 on your gauge) when you have taken out the free play and the hub is almost centered. Then you have to start eliminating the vertical differgence by tighenting that particular spoke. What you do is elastic deformation of the rim by adding force (tightening the spoke). At the end all spokes should be close to equal torque but you will have differences. If you have one spoke which is much different from the others, it is likely because the rim is bent (plastic deformation) Good luck and keep on doing videos. I APPRECIATE your way of bridging lack of expertise by analytic way of trying.
