I love this waiata, especially the original version written by my Koro Henare Waitoa of Ngati Porou, Te Riu o Waiapu for the homecoming of Kamupene C otherwise knowen as ngā kaupoi, youll hear alot of our Kaumatua now and they hate the upbeat version of this waiata! Especially because alot of the lyrics have be changed and repeated like "Te Haki Te Haki" the original version is a long drawn out "Te Haki"... the biggest critic when it comes to this waiata is my Nanny Cindy Waitoa who was Henare Waitoas favorite mokopuna and she always corrects anyone who sings it wrong... anyway loved to hear you sing this waiata

Kia ora, Matua T, As you know I teach rongoa , I use this whakataukii, for the past 13 yrs. Now i read many times, not to lay our harakeke cutting left overs at the base ?, Because I believe in this whakataukii, my dad said we do lay the leftover at the base because the birds use it to make nests , the bellbird lives inside the cluster of harakeke as harakeke should grow in whanau groupings, thus the wee birds collect our string thread waste and make their nest- to clarify we only harvest what we need, however the conservation dept, Manaaki whenua and flax works org, all say don't do this, it creates fungi, killing the harakeke, so I was diggin deep into this whakataukii , and ask my 86yr old full blooded Maori dad, he says there shouldn't be much wastage, as many wahine take the Harakeke butts, some they collect the orange red gels and some roots, , the harakeke seed, to tohunga for medicinal purposes, they must be think we dump mountainous piles of it, all my girlfriends only harvest what they need, thus fungi doesn't grow, if the birds pick it up and make their nests in the heart of the cluster, I thought we are helping our environment I certainly loved this, as you reminded me of my dads teachings, I adored this kinaki whakataukii. You always pull out amazing things from your harakeke potae, hehehe nga mihi

aw matua , u can have my TV its brand new sittin in the corner, i got it for dad to watch the rugby, now I forget i dunno how to work it, too much buttons on the remote, Nana said she saw the tiger moth to the stealth bomber, koro said the best thing was the remote control as great as sliced bread, we are old school, keep cool til after school ,on your computer u can google tvnz1 and watch live news. I dont watch the news either, I find it negative - not like the old days where Roger Gascoigne found something cool to korero about, The Carkoi - I didnt know what they was on about either. To me my whole 56yrs is still the same, except their are more n more blue eyed maori, waka blondies, and thats ok, being Maori is just being me, Im sick of living up to what others say, I just wanna enjoy my life and increase my te reo maori. No ones business but mine, Uncle Wi wrote Tutira mai nga iwi, heck at Flaxmere primary school we learnt it straight from the horses mouth, then later at Lyall Bay in Wgtn it was there too, like Bob Marley his waiata lives on, I like that waiata u sung. I been putting a melody to some karakia, cause thats what I do to remember nga kupu. I love that karakia , can u try put a melody to it too? My mum says everything changes like the tides, like the moon, I hope you do a korero on Matariki, that would be awesome. Sending loving healing vibes ehoa. Arohanui Matua T. Tu meke whaikorero , to whakaaro, love it. Lets us love one another, Arohangia Tātou, ae ra.
