Yup, I'm one of those who waited--or was lead on, more like--for 7 years after the movie was first announced back in 2017. This anime series was the best thing to ever show up in my life in 2016 when that same year was not my best. I had depression for months during 2016: isolating myself in my room, crying myself to sleep every night, daily self-loathing, and constantly thinking about the worst of my future. While "Yuri on Ice" wasn't a cure-all at the time, it definitely left what I would call the first positive thing to impact my life. It gave me a reason to look forward to something good. Yuuri Katsuki was--and still is--the first anime character I've ever seen that was actually relatable. While I still have some criticisms about the series, mainly due to Yurio (but that's a different story for a different time) and the animation of the skating sequences, I was still hyped and emotionally invested. The series really surprised me with each new episode. I didn't want this series or feelings of anticipation to end. But alas, all good things must come to an end, right? Cue "see you next level." Boy, did those four words get my hopes up. After the series, I fell down the rabbit hole of YoI fanfics on ao3 since late 2016. Then, in 2017, the movie's first teaser was released. I was so happy and excited. Finally, another "Yuri on Ice" project to look forward to! I kept checking online almost every day for any news and was happy every time I saw anything about the movie, like pictures that were probably screenshots and social media updates. Just when I was about to lose hope, came the second trailer in late 2020-21. That gave my sense of hope a boost! Even during the radio silence, I still held on and waited. Then, in 2023, came the little announcement that despite the anime's success, it didn't generate enough profit for the studio. I was worried, I thought "is this is it? No movie then?" But no word of cancellation, so I carried on waiting. That same year, Mappa or Avex released the opening sequence of the series. Nothing about the movie but I was happy that YoI was still present. Then finally, cue April 19, 2024. I saw the announcement of the movie's cancellation through Kictor's video. I. Freaking. Cried. Even to this day, I still can't believe how we were lead on for 7 damn years. Their reasoning of "various circumstances" answers absolutely nothing. In fact, it only leads to more questions. How could a company start on a project, especially with the knowledge that the original series didn't make enough money? Why announce a movie in 2017, then report that the low profit 5-6 years later? What was gained in leading fans on for so long? Will the movie still be possible in the hands of a different studio? So many questions that will probably never be answered, but the fact remains as this: even after over a month since the cancellation, it still hurts. I know this post sounds dramatic, but in a sea of typical shounen works, "Yuri on Ice" was a breath of fresh air with a touch of representation of mental health and a sprinkle of LGBTQ+ love. Damn, I think I chronicled a 7-year part of my biography in three paragraphs; sorry about that. But, I just wanted to express how much this series meant to me and others. 💙

God, the Title of Yuri on Ice is enough to make me go back to those beautiful lost days of 2016 when we would watch the series with my best friends before school in the morning while it was on weekly airing. Just listening to the intro of the series shakes my soul and I mean we still sing "We were born to make history" every time we get together to eat or talk about the past today as university students. YOI was one of those few stories that we could see ALL together, yes it did not have the best animations during the choreographies in secondary scenes and several memes made us laugh about that topic, but maan YOI was a base that I clung to during my youth and Even today, every time I feel that life is attacking me, it is enough to go to Spotify and play "Yuri on Ice" and "Agape" to feel that small comfort of the moments that were. Seeing that they were not going to release the 'sequel' was devastating, every year we always joke with my friends how YOI was going to return to destroy social media but well...not in this way I guess. But if Kuroshitsuji returned from the bahúl of oblivion, I suppose some kind soul will bring YOI to life ;W; i hope so. PS, I am willing to pay any kind soul who organizes and makes fans to fans YOI related content.

I think I’m heart broken

I saw YOI when it aired in 2016/2017, I used to wait every Thursday for a new episode with such excitement and joy. I never liked the yaoi that were airing at the time, being southern Italian I didn't like the coldness of the characters and the rigid rules that they imposed themselves and for the first time I saw in YOI something that I could relate personally, such different characters, (two Italians too!) such beautiful songs! And really at the time we were so used to "queer baiting" that it was considered the norm and when they kissed it was like hell break loose, nobody expected that! YOI changed my life, it helped me making friends that I still have close to my heart, it helped me form a friendship that in time become my first love story (it's ended now but I wont throw away that time for nothing in the world) and to find the strength to come out. I'm heartbroken that it won't come back but in my heart, and in the heart of everyone who loves it, it still lives on and it will forever.

You popped in my recommendations and tbh I'm mourning... Hearing you talk about made my feelings about it more real and now I'm here bawling my eyes out. I'm like you... I get mappa... But at the same time I don't get it at all. Hurts deeply knowing that we won't have this movie. As my first BL, Victor and Yuri will always have a place in my heart.

First of all, hii fellow YOI fan it's lovely to have you in the fandom no matter when you discovered the anime!! ❤❤ Personally YOI means so much to me, I had just gotten my first laptop for my birthday which is in December so it was nice and cold and I have such fond memories of cuddling up in my blanket watching YOI. it was 2016/2017 and omg i used to rewatch it every winter until recently 😭 the soundtrack, the characters, they're all so magical and mean so much to me. also i was young and gay without a lot of great representation in anime and everyone was obsessed with it at the time, being on tumblr in 2016-2019 was peak for the fandom imo so many memes and fanart saved to my phone 😭 I can't believe this is how I'm finding out about the movie being canceled.... I've waited for so long that I honestly can't say I'm surprised. I haven't heard any news about it in so long I honestly already gave up hope but still it's kind of heartbreaking 💔 i don't know what else to say... i need to go rewatch it again and cry 😭🫂

Like you, I also discovered Yuuri!!! On Ice in 2021 when I was having a really hard time. I could relate to Yuuri and it gave me the confidence to believe in myself. I don't know where I would be without this anime. I feel the exact same as you about mourning and everything else. Except I'm neither a writer nor an artist. But I will definitely continue consuming all the wonderful fanfic, fanart and other fanmade stuff as well as the official material. As much as it hurts I will do what I can to keep the fandom alive. I will always remember this anime that has helped me so much and has had such an impact on me. It will always have a place in my heart.

I am going to cry. It so sad, that this awesome series is like so under the radar right know. I just was really excited about that movie, but I guess it never was meant to be, sadly. I really hope that I can at least get the manga to read it, so I have a second reminder of them. Thanks for making the video and I think all the people who have waited, are deserving to mourn over it.
