53 mighty horses under the hood, it accelerated like a rocket sled entombed in frozen jello. It's chief advantage was that you would never go fast enough to get into trouble and no girl would ever be caught in one at a drive in theater.

My dad bought 2 used 'vettes in the 80s. First one for his wife to get her out of her clean '69 two door Impala with a 350. Ihad a chance to buy that car for $400 and I passed. My brother bought it and blew up the motor in short order...Anyway my dad took over his wive's "Shove-it" when she bought an Accord and drove it for quite a few miles. It was definitely a dog..

I see this, then I see the 1984 Thunderbird, and I think this 1982 is just not a good looking car. The 1984 was very attractive.

Ah yes, only American car makers of the early 80s would put a 4 cylinder in a 3,500lb car. And expect it to perform well.

He calls this Chevette "homegrown". Nothing about this car was US-based. The car itself was based on the European Opel/Vauxhall T-platform, and the diesel engine was made by Isuzu... Hell, even the gasoline engine wasn't US designed.

A friend I worked with bought a diesel Chevette, he was bragging every day about the MPG’s said he was getting 40+ miles a gallon, we got us a 8 gallon can of diesel and added a little every once and a while, we got him up to about 80 mpg before he caught us. He was mad at us for about 6 months, but talking about an old boy that was tickled while we was doing it!😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I think the only thing in that era that beat it's mpg was the Dodge Colt...with the "economy" lever..lol My uncle...I believe got around 55 or 60 mpg with the Colt. Then again...he never drove it past 45 mph.

The theatrics of their tests were so cheesy...... why is there a group of cones in a circle with someone standing in the middle for a turning circle test????? That means they had to place the cones within the exact area they already determined other wise they would be driving over the cones if it turned tighter than their initial setup..... Its just funny. 😂 then home cheese runs over and slaps the roof for the brake test? 😂😂

Well, if they began the diesel Chevette 0-60 test back in 1982 it should almost be there by now.

That was expensive for 1982. Over $8000 as tested. I got a Ford Escort (4 speed manual, no A/C) for about $6000 in 1986. That $8000 in 1982 is about $26,000 in 2024. Also I chuckled at the idea that 2400 pounds was heavy. Cars now are VERY heavy.

I had a 1983 Pontiac Acadian with an Isuzu diesel with a standard transmission. Cost me like $7 to fill it up, and it went 300 miles. Lasted until it rusted out, and then I used it as a generator and farm engine for 25 years.
