This chap speaks sense. Being in my mid 60s. I am a bit late to the hobby. I did the full course back in 1998 via the post. 18 modules. I did find it a bit difficult. Unfortunately I was made redundant and never did the exam. I may have scraped through who knows. I never bothered again. It felt like the people who are at the top don't really want any body but the best to become Radio Hams and make the wall to high to keep the riff raff out. I can understand that to some degree. After all the average CBers round where I live are or were a bit short in the brain dept. They buy a cb, press the button, swear at each other and threaten to cut each others coax! I didn't do well at school. in fact I may as well not gone. I got unclassified in my CSE maths exam. But I left school and joined the army, I became an advance signaller, Heavy goods driving instructor, Promotion. I left the army in 93. I ended up a Warehouse manager, Transport manager and had a NEBOSH certificate. So I don't class my self as riff raff. Recently my wife passed away and I found my self in a hole and sinking. I discovered you can do a foundation course with Essex Ham and take the exam at home! Wow how easy is that. Well I have done the course and take the exam in the morning. To keep my mind off things, I may even study a bit more who knows. See what tomorrow brings.

@@DXCommanderHQ I have a question for you if you don't mind.. Regarding the new calls for intermediates. Is it going to be possible to decline the new "M" calls and retain the 2E's? I did hear a while ago that was possible? But, I'm not sure? Thanks Callum.

One who takes the exam as of September should be careful with the Restrictions section of this video ( 4:55 ), because things have changed, and I assume it is the very opposite now. Thank you for the new version of this video found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaO0hGWOpZqjbbc&pp=iAQB Now Foundation Licensees are restricted to 25W operation, as well as build the own tx station kit. I'm still not sure about the band plan changes, though. I am also worried about the exam reference data "ex307" printout which potentially contains old information regarding the "Maximum Peak Envelope Power level" right column in the "Foundation Licence Parameters" table. I booked my exam for September to benefit from the syllabus changes. If the exam weight of this topic is 6 marks like mentioned in this video that could significantly impact the results of one's exam .

8:45 if the multiple choice options has 14MHz and 16 MHz I coukd get it wrong because eyeballing by the given chart I see 16MHz while you say 14MHz. 8:55 the same as between 100 and 200MHz it is quite impossible to eyeball 144MHz. I haven't taken the exam yet but I hope the options are nowhere near, otherwise what is the point?
@EssexhamUk
@EssexhamUk Ай бұрын
Don't stress. The exam would never ask a question that requires that level of precision. The chart is to give you a rough idea. Don't worry about it.

The power limit imposed on simplex gateways needs to be increased inline with repeaters. 5W ERP to 25W ERP.

We cover what is required to help you get your Foundation licence. There is more on the Ionosphere at Intermediate. As we’ve said in response to your other negative feedback, we are following the RSGB’s exam syllabus to help you to get your first licence

Using a single antenna on a band its doesn't resonate on may be possible with a ATU to convince the radio you have a resonant antenna connected to it, but you will receive very little signal and will transmit even less because the antenna resonance is required for the creation of an Electro Magnetic Field which will not happen on a non-resonant antenna, worst still like the G5RV you have the feeder line becoming part of the antenna and start transmitting energy where you don't want it transmitted.

I think this is the fifth such post you’ve made, and my answer remains the same - our training material is to help get you through your Foundation exam. We are following the RSGB exam syllabus. You are referring to Intermediate-level information that will be covered when you study for your Intermediate exam.

I was surprised you didn't say what an impedance is, you also said that wavelength affects Impedance, sorry but wavelength has no effect at all on impeadance,if it did we would have coax cable for use on each band which we do not.

Again, may I respectfully refer you to the RSGB exam specification (section 4C6). We are teaching required knowledge to help you to get your Foundation licence Clive.

A Good video; I was impressed that a field diagram was shown for the dipole, and was then disappointed that these diagrams didn't continue on the next slides. You also failed to point out that the electromagnetic field doesn't actually touch the antenna, and will travel further away as the height of the antenna above ground increases.

Sorry to hear that you’re disappointed with our free course material. As per your previous negative comment, we are only following the RSGB exam syllabus and your point is not required learning for your Foundation exam. You’ll cover this when you study for your Intermediate exam

A very good video up to the point when you talk about demodulators, a demodulator is not a detector, if the exam is using the term interchangeably then it should not be. If you put a AM signal into a demodulator you will not get anything meaningful out of it.
@EssexhamUk

That is the exact wording from the RSGB exam syllabus, so if it comes up in the exam, that’s what RSGB is looking for.

Can you go straight for the full licence without taking the first two? I'm 65 & learned Morse code at the age of 5. I've been involved in electronics since 1991 & have been an electrician since 1982. I've taken both the first two exams as mocks & passed both without studying. I'd obviously have to study for the full licence. I'm just wondering if I can just go for that directly. Thanks. 😊👍
