American schools were much more regimented in the past. In the 1960s there were far fewer electives, and things like art classes or psychology were mostly in upper middle class suburban schools. And city schools didn't have anywhere near the school spirit programs or other social things. There was some of that, but not what I see on videos today.

This is literally so relatable. I've been on exchange in Chile for 8 months and in the beginning I definetly feel like I lost my goofy side and yes it's hard to make lots of friends because when you arrive, everyone already has their friends and their groups.

Christina. My husband and I have an exchange student living with us. I *think* we have a good relationship with him but he is really missing his family. Do you have any tips that we can help out with?
@ChristinaWedvik
@ChristinaWedvik 7 ай бұрын
Ahh - that’s hard! People deal with that individually, so maybe he just need some time alone, but I think anyone would appriciate if you would communicate that you’re there for him and want his best, so that he at least «knows for sure» that he can ask for help/support if he thinks it’s hard

Hej!

Tusen takk for at du deler!! Og jeg kjenner meg veldig igjen i det du skriver, og et utvekslingsår kan gå så sinnsykt opp og ned - og det er det som gjør de gode stundene ekstra gode 🩵

As an American whole left my small town to a bigger town with new people it has been very hard to make friends because people dont openly come up to you. I intend to go on an exchange year a year from now! also my schools program for exchange students is wonderful. They get put as a class priority and can take the highest or lowest levels. im sorry you had a bit of a rough experience.

What is exchange? It is exchanging places with another student?
@ChristinaWedvik
@ChristinaWedvik 7 ай бұрын
A high school exchange is you as a student, travelling to another country to live and attend school there - in «exchange» for sharing your culture kind of haha. Maybe it was a different concept before, but now it doesn’t mean you have to exchange place with someone else/that it goes both ways

Being an exchange student means studying abroad! Most normal for University students, but some do it in high school too :)

I might be exchanging in Japan for 4 months and I’m pretty scared. I’m really excited but I’m also terrified. But the thing I’m grateful for is that 2 other people may be going if I’m accepted. I just hope everything goes well :)

Being able to select more fun classes in 11th grade (USA) is entirely dependent on your success and grades in 9th and 10th grade. Most Students don't have easy classes in 11th grade. In fact, it tends to be your most difficult year as far as rigorous studies and schoolwork goes. 12th grade is typically when everyone takes thier easy classes.

I’m an exchange in the US as well(from japan). I’m an only one from asia, and there are other exchange students from European countries whose English sound perfect for me. So it was unexpected that you’re suffered by similar things. Thank you for uploading this video.

Just be yourself no matter where you go. And in America, you could have a completely different experience from one school to the next. The kids in the schools can be one way in a school in one city or state and completely different in another. They may be why others have different experience
@ChristinaWedvik
@ChristinaWedvik Жыл бұрын
Absolutely!! Although «being myself» was something that I - and apparently a lot of other exchange students unfortunately struggled with in another language and culture 🥴🤝

Yeah, but we also have kindergarden kind of, so I had a year left of school while ly american friends who were as old went off to college. but I’ve found out the american bachelor is 4 years, while norwegian only 3, so I guess that’s where the difference catches up!

i’ve been on exchange for barely over a week now. i’ve barely spoken and everyone here is speaking for me all the time. i don’t have the words to tell them that they’re wrong about me or something, and i can’t stop comparing myself to my exchange (in our program instead of switching places, one of you goes first to the other country and then you go back together so you’re together the whole time) because she was so much better in english when she first came to my family than i am in german now. anyways you guys are not alone ❤ fighting💪

I was an exchange student in US in 1991/92. It is a lottery, regarding the host family. My experience with my first host parents was terrible and had to leave. Second family was much better but that first experience was so overwhelming. Till the present day I wonder what went wrong with those people from the first family.

I did a semester abroad at the University in Bergen, Norway, back in 2018. I can relate to your experiences! It was nearly impossible to make true Norwegian friendships, I got homesick so bad etc. I even hadn't someone saying goodbye when I left. As I was older already I just tried to do the best out of the situation and did many things alone and focus on studies. My boyfriend came to visit me for one month. Even though I had hard times, I would always do it again. I think the 'Best time of my life' doesn't work for everyone and that is absolutely okay as well!
