Lazy Shell armor and either Safety Ring or Troopa’s Pin should easily let you withstand Johnny’s attacks, even if you don’t deal a lot of damage. Better to go on defense than offense unless you can guard perfectly all the time. I like to have Bowser and Geno on the active party so Mario takes 1 damage if you guard a tad early while your chain is 5 or more.
