This is one of the works that enchanted me that evening so long ago at Carnegie Hall with another top-flight trio. I was at an age, and the music was Brahms, and it connected with my very soul.

Beautiful and haunting. I remember first hearing this as a piece of incidental background music towards the end of a TV program by Jonathan Meades called "Father To The Man". Took me ages to find out the name of the piece. As it turned out, right at the beginning of the same programme was another piece by Benjamin Bitten that had me hooked: 'Romance' from Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge. Well worth a watch that programme. Thank you for posting this. It made my day!

These dances date from 1896. Cowen wrote a second set some years later and so it is best to refer to them as Four English Dances in the Olden Style, Set I. The original manuscript of the full orchestral version is in the library of the Royal College of Music in London, RCM, MS 5058m. The score was published by Novello, Ewer & Co, London & New York (1896). There is also a version for small orchestra. This arrangement for Piano Quintet I have not come across before. Full Orch.:2222/4230/timp.perc/str Small Orch:2121/11(=cnt)10/timp.perc/str 1. Stately Dance 2. Rustic Dance 3. Graceful Dance 4. Country Dance The ‘Stately Dance’ is extracted from 'Village Scenes' (1893); the ‘Rustic Dance’ is taken from his ‘Hear the Sounds of Jocund Music’ from 'Summer on the River' (1893); and the 'Graceful Dance' is taken from ‘Christmas Festivities’ from 'Christmas Scenes' (1894). The dances are charming, and typical of Cowen's unique voice, but it is difficult to identify what is specifically English about them. Indeed, the ‘Country Dance’ is practically a Polish mazurka. However, they may have influenced Edward German and Eric Coates to write their respective dances and suites.

A wonderful rendition of a beautiful piece of music. I recently discovered it in a TV production on the 90th birthday of the late Queen mother. It conveys feelings of nostalgia beautifully.

Is the cameraman the husband of the flute player?!?! We saw her more than the violinist! Thanks for ruining the video- jerk 🤬 This has to be one of the greatest interpretations of this piece ever played by an amazing violinist!! ❤

An interesting piece - very nicely played by the group. I liked the interplay of images. It almost looked like the musicians were at the mosque.

This was fun to do! If anyone's interested in the thought process behind it, winter is a time for much reflection and thought. A time for stories as well. I choose my flute in the key of C as it is my deepest sounding and most legato flute that I own. I do this to better reflect the sometimes solemn nature of winter's influence upon us. We are sure to include crows, coyotes, wolves, frozen ice on the lake, wind and of course the sound of our own two-legged footprints is they crunch through the snow as we go to check our snares. As this improvised piece is about that time, I 'bookend' it with the geese leaving.. and then eventually returning... signaling that cyclical departure of autumn and return of spring!
