I really wanna see more of this painting, did u continue working on it and is there any footage for it? Am not really a painter nor know how to paint, i just really enjoy watching people paint and put their personal touches into paintings. Am really really really curious about the results, so if there is any footages i would really appreciate it

So... what we are really learning here is that new artists are set up for failure from the get-go. Got it. Spend more if you want to create beautiful art, instead of stuff that looks like a 5th grader did it. Thanks for the tips and info. 👍

I thought it was going to make black for sure since my tube of Gamblin Chromatic Black is a combination of pigment green 36 and and pigment violet 19, but I see that these colours are both leaning more towards blue. Still would not have guessed it would have been so blue, but more of a cold black. It's actually a nice blue! Thank for for sharing!

But if you continue with oil paints on top of a mark, don't they mix with the charcoal/chalk? 😮

the question is why to do portrait in painting? A simple photo shot is better.

Why not mix your own paint? Takes a bit of hard work, but it really helps the learning process.

Ken , I started oil painting as art student in 1966, the first painting, a classical still life, was rendered in grey values, and then color glazed with Copal medium. It works well and drys pretty much 12 hrs plus. It has a mild fragrance of orange, which adds to it's ambience while using. And yes I've used every solvent under the sun, that another lifetime of stories. I really enjoy your posts on instagram ! Thx KennytheBrush

Hello, I am from soft pastel and oil pastel, only began about a year ago. The dust from the soft pastels I am now concerned I've already inhaled the heavy metals from the dust it makes. So I switched to oil pastels. But, now I'm at the point where I want to begin to learn how to use oil paints! So thank you for this video! Where or how did you learn?

what is the paper that some school uses, like a flipchart style? I thought the large size is great for training.

One test I have done to test pigment load is to see how quickly it fades out with more and more white mixed in. Some artists grade paints are surprisingly low pigmented and filled with other stuff, yet premium priced. And another clue is if the paint feels mushy, like Gamblin. I think is fine to use cheaper paints for some earth tone pigments as color saturation may not be so important. But for your brighter colors, get more for your money going for the better paints like Old Holland, Sennelier, etc. But test the paint brand first before you buy a lot. Many vary in how they feel too. I personally hate mushy paints like Gamblin or Vasari and feel they are a rip off.

Have you ever tried Lukas 1862 Professional oil paints? They are very reasonably priced and I absolutely love them. I agree with you about Michael Harding paints though. They are amazing.

I read that if you size paper with shellac and put oil paint on it, over time, there is a tendency for the oil paint to crack and flake off both shellac and oil paint will flake off after a while. Do you know anything about that?

Fantastic conversation! As someone who went through the French Beaux-Arts system I definitely can testify that I was pushed to get into my "style" right after the first year, so technically i had only 1 year to learn all techniques at a superficial level (I tried etching, photography etc) even though I wanted to focus on painting. Actually I know that i was able to pass the entrance exam because I already had a unique style before entering the school. 20 years later I am trying to "lose" that style, I am not attached to it anymore even though it was unique and to an extend well liked. Some of my drawings were even taken to be album covers and even tattoos, but what I truly love is the Renaissance period, and to Will's point, I am also digging Titian and learning to appreciate him more and more now. Last note, when I chose my medium of choice (painting) unfortunately they were no teachers at my beaux-art school that I wanted to follow tje foot steps so I changed schools, went from the south to the north, and same story... Being closer to Paris, my teachers were even more conceptual. It was so heart breaking because my intention was to learn techniques.

Thank you for that video. I did have a question . I see some artist do a washy back ground with Gamsol and it looks as if they leave it that way. Im confused about that because I thought you always need a binder to keep it from flaking off. I hope you can help. Thanks!

Hello, I am not sure if you'll see my comment but I just found this video, well it was mostly a suggestion that appeared and it was really interesting, I really liked it! With how you explained it, I'll be able to remember easily the difference between the two. I started taking Oil Painting class because I always wanted to learn. It my second year but I didn't know everything about solvant and medium so thank you for your explanation. As for the tools I use as medium, I'm curently using the "Médium Vénitien" by Lefranc Bourgeois. And as solvant, I used the one recommended by the teacher that I really like by Marin. (Marin Beaux-Art) I must try the one you use though. Thank you again for your video.

You are right. Have you ever tried Umton? It is from my country, Czech republic, they are "cheap" but high quality, highly pigmented. It is traditional brand in my country, used by many master painters. I do not know it is available in England, but if you can, give it a try. I still do not understand a purpose of student quality. Because as you said, it is immitation of pigment and behaves differently during mixing, so how can student can learn something proper way? And yes they tend to be rubbish.
