Barry Hewitson served on The Ark in the 70s as a mem2 stoker worked on the No 2 catapult. Whenever there was a family's day, we would visit his mess (2KZ4 mess). My Dad also used to show me the phantoms, buchaneers, and gannets in the hanger deck. They were great times.

Does anyone remember and have photographs of an incident around 1972 at Lion Country Safari near Atlanta GA. where many lions climbed on an old Buick? Lions on the roof, hood and trunk. I was in that car with family & friends. The roof was sagging way down, and we were pushing up on it to keep it from caving in! People in other cars were taking photos & the Rangers were called and had to lure the lions off the car with food. Any copies of photos would be great for us to see!

Love, Love, Love this...Thank you for memory lane for sure. This is when the Keys and Key West I think were at their Best. You could drive down the Hwy, and see the beautiful water the whole way..(Except for like Marathon and such) My family is from Key West and I have been going for years and lived there a couple of times. I even saw my Grandpas Standard oil sign at the Shrimp Boat docks..(Sand Marine Station) So miss those times. Many Thanks for this...Karen Kincaid Heath.

I would be grateful if you would please email me to discuss further (my email address is in the ‘about’ section of my channel). I look forward to hearing from you! Best regards, Matilda

Great to see. I traveled across those bridges when dad went to Key West for the Navy. Later, went across the new bridges when I took dad to the Naval Hospital or to the Base Exchange. Was told by the base security I needed to get base stickers put on my pickup truck. Never took the truck down there again and took dad's car instead from then on. The reason for the guard telling me that, was because dad was a retired Master Chief. They wanted it known who was riding in the vehicle. He wasn't even allowed to put the stickers on his own vehicle as the Senior Chief would not hear of it.

@@brianduke6968 He made Master Chief en route to a ship off Africa in 1964. He got the news and hat and collar devices when he arrived on the plane in Brazil. An Admiral sent them. We have a copy of the message in his folder. It did cause a bit of a problem when he got to the ship as the ship's copy of his orders said Senior Chief and as such would have bunked with the others. As a Master Chief, they couldn't let that happen so he was moved into a cabin in officer's territory. In the Navy, an E-9 is also responsible for providing " guidance and training" of enlisted and officers up to the O-6 level. The highest Navy officer on his cruise was an O-4.

Great home movie. The 8mm home movie camera was a staple back in the 1960's. My first trip to Key West was in 1969 when I was 9 years old and my parents took me there. There is a segment in the movie where we see the window crank for the car for about 10 seconds. That cracked me up. My mother had a habit of always filming something obtuse like that in every home movie she ever made! Thanks so much for sharing. It brings back fond memories.

Thank you for posting this. My dad worked at the one in Texas before I was born, it had a similar look and layout, of course the landscape was different. Every few years it would flood and animals would get loose. The park changed names by the time I remember it, kept the style though. It is long gone now, as is my dad... this brought some happy memories for me.

I can feel a certain sense of sympathy for the folks who knew Key West back in the day before it became what it is. Still a fabulous place to unwind for a while, but I for one would not care to live there. Way to expensive and crowded.

Call it crazy, call it wicked. but in my on self impression I think the Audacious class Aircraft carriers just like the "HMS Ark Royal" was still way ahead on their own time. And if they just given them a chance to go and served with the other Navies around the world, after their excellent service in the RN. Perhaps they could still proved for how worthy they are in the Navy fleet.

They did not get a full lifespan. Eagle emerged from a 5 year rebuild in 64 which was supposed to extend her life by 20 years. Ark followed Eagle in a rebuild. Unfortunately her 5 year rebuild was cut short to 3 following Sterlings devaluation and the early retirement of the ship she was scheduled to relieve in 72, the Victorious.
