Daniel here and always listening! A few points to consider: First and foremost, I completely agree with your approach to this, but I also firmly believe they are lands; especially in contexts like EDH (not cEDH) - where untapped lands aren’t always critical. What solidifies them as lands is their synergy with quintessential land strategies like Crucible of Worlds. While cards like Crop Rotation or standard land tutors can’t fetch them directly, you’ve already highlighted that their instant, creature, or sorcery sides are easy to search for. In decks without green, this can absolutely function as a ramp effect. But also to consider effects like Radha, Courser of Kruphix/Oracle of Mul Daya.. you can always have a land, or an opportunity to have additional effect at hand. Moreover, many of these MDFCs have fantastic non-land effects. Emeria’s Call, Sink into Stupor, and that new elf drawing cards are great examples of their versatility. Personally, I count MDFCs as lands, but I always ensure my deck still has a solid land base before factoring these in. I treat them as “bonus lands” or “half a land,” but in colors without green, they’re absolute bangers. When an MDFC has broad utility, such as serving as a removal spell, it’s usually better to swap out a spell for it instead of a land. Replacing a land may force you to play the MDFC as a land more often than you’d like, limiting its flexibility. By removing your least impactful spell, you maintain your land count and gain added protection against being mana-screwed. However, if the MDFC has a more niche application, it might make sense to substitute it for a land, as its situational nature won’t significantly affect your spell count. Ultimately, always trust your instincts and consider the specific needs of your deck (but Sink into Stupor never failed me; on the either side).

For a very long time, my fav W land was Flagstones of Trokair, because of all land destruction in local meta and fact it was legendary land from Time Spiral which was very scarce here. Today it may be same, BUT maybe I love Emeria's Call with land on the other side more (but it is cheating as it is not 100% a land card, still may count though). It is a great card for a lot of styles.

This is a great topic to learn and study some of the best philosophers and authors to learn terms like "paradox" or "determinism". Like Kant, with his emphasis on the interplay between freedom and determinism, might see MTG boosters as a microcosm of human experience, where the randomness of the cards parallels the unpredictability of life. Yet, players, much like moral agents in Kantian ethics, must exercise their rational faculties to create meaningful strategies, transforming chance into purpose. And for that, i really think Kant would LOVE to play the game. Very nice and really deep episode, it really makes once again to think how great the booster packs are for us to be always cashflow for Hasbro.

My Grimgrin deck has been a Voltron, a Tokens Matter, a Zombie Tribal, and is currently an Aristocrats archetype. This is becoming more and more of an issue as commanders are becoming more and more flexible. It doesn't stop at the brewing process either. As a player is honing and shaping the theme of their deck, the inner mechanics can begin to skew away from the original deck design. What then? Keep the original deck and build a brand new one?
@mtgghouldude5 ай бұрын
Exactly my point. I've heard a lot of people take their favorite decks and leave them "as is" like a snapshot to the past and just build something new. But yeah, as card quality gets better and more cards get printed we are probably always gonna run into that issue. Adapt or Fail as they say.

No shade to the content creator. I'm disappointed that the MTG community now feels empowered to police how others have fun. It's OK to lose. It's OK to build different power levels. It's OK to have a deck you play once a month.

I have Marath deck that is honestly such a menace. I'm not even trying to hide it, the deck has so much pinging off and growing my board I feel like I'm playing sudoku. Accumulate any amount of mana or +1/+1 doublers and things get so out of hand. No spells need to be cast, and it starts to sneak up on people. Give marath deathtouch and you have a free 1 mana removal for most creatures, and doublers allow marath to never run out of counters to remove.

Go-Shintai of Life's Origin is the first deck I ever built. I won one game without realizing it because I was having too much fun trying to fetch all the Shrines one by one and resolving them. Hate list: Any Sliver commander. I hate slivers. Especially the new one from Modern Horizons 3. Slivers create boring games where either all removal needs to be dedicated to dealing with specific high-impact slivers, the sliver player needs to be removed from the table fast before because if left unchecked they become a problem out of the blue. In my experience it's exceedingly binary deck that either does nothing or threatens the entire table. Marrow Gnawer. Not really that powerful, but just so one-dimensional in its tactics. Combination of Rat Colonies and global Fear for rats means if you're not playing black or artifact creatures, you're prime rat food if you don't keep the rat population in check. In general I dislike decks that are one-dimensional and/or extremely "hot or cold" based on whether or not the table dedicates resources to keep them from reaching critical mass while also being very obvious about it.
@mtgghouldude5 ай бұрын
I love the idea of Slivers but not playing them. I can agree though, you either kill them early or they become a hard threat to counter. On the topic of rats, Colonies aren't that bad, a simple -1/-1 to the board can wipe them out. Relentless Rats are a different story though. But same with Slivers, they do everything or nothing.

@@mtgghouldude Yeah, my main beef with Marrow-Gnawer is the one-dimensional nature of the deck combined with Fear. I actually like the exact same deck with Karumonix, the Rat King much more since Toxic brings inevitability, but without Fear the opponent actually has the option to block, making the deck more interactive. You still want to kill the rats, but at least you can buy some time and the rats don't automatically choose the player(s) not running black as primary target anymore. With Karumonix the deck also recovers a bit better so the deck doesn't just randomly peter off after one board wipe if they get unlucky with land flood.
