O.K. I am a Harmonica player 60 plus Years. In a mixed session of other musicians playing their songs I mostly ask What key they are playing. Well most musicians know what key they are in. Yet often they just jump in and play it and leave me guessing . I reach out and try to toot the harmonica with the first hole blow note and maybe a few others. if it is dissonant I know right away if its not he right key. By the time I find the right key the song may be mid way or almost done. So I naturally nix my harmonica offering. It has been a source of frustration for as many years as I have been playing. I guess I have had no success in training my ear Yet. I am still waiting for a AH! HA! moment when light goes on and the method dawns on me. Is there any help with my plight among You?

I still cant tell, I've DJ'd for over 10 years and still can't tell keys apart, I still mix in key since it generally sounds better anyways but I have to rely on the software telling me what key it's in, otherwise I'm screwed lol.

So now I have to carry around a piano to find the key?
@bluebeep3254 Жыл бұрын
You’re probably already carrying around a phone. There are free piano apps out there. Probably won’t make the phone any heavier. Or, you could find another thing to complain about.

@@bluebeep3254 well thank you for telling me about the phone app. Now I would like to complain about the Biden Administration failing the American people with high inflation

@@paulbush6537 if a bunch of Americans that watched this video started lugging around pianos, I would not be surprised with their political leaders failing at their jobs either.

You can also use V7 to I to pitch your singing voice: play G7 and C on your instrument and you will automatically sing in the key of C. Play E7 and A and you will automatically sing in the key of A.

You've never heard of " overthinking " or " diplacusis " I have been suffering from Diplacusis for two years now, nothing sounds in tune. Not one note sounds correct , everything sounds out of key. I used to hear a song ,and know the key ,and chord changes immediately. This is abject hell that no one seems to have a cure for .

Yes, a helpful and easy to understand lesson. Thank you. I'm interested though, in how pathetic the attention spans of people are such that many lessons (like this one) feel that in order to keep the ball rolling they have to provide background music when you aren't demonstrating something that requires the ear to discern. Personally I find it distracting. It's the same energy to me as shops like Guitar Center playing music in the background in a place where ideally you're trying out an instrument. Same feeling I have when my wife is happy to keep the radio on a talk station in the car while talking to me. In my mind I'm being dragged in two different directions. Maybe I'm a weirdo.

The great thing about music is, you play what sounds and feels good, rather than following music theory. I don’t believe composers over analyze what they create.

how to determine whether its a major or minor scale?
@DustinRudzinski3 жыл бұрын
Those that hear G minor like I first did, do this. Hum each note, one by one, for the g minor scale over the full chord progression. While G fits, there's 2 other notes I found that are dissonant over some chords in the progression, eliminating that possibility. So, the root note won't always reveal the key, but as long as you can hum your do re mi in major/minor, start on that note and work your way through the scale until you're sure.
@ricomajestic Жыл бұрын
You have to sing the correct scale though- there is more than one minor scale but only one major scale. You have to sing G Dorian which is also a minor scale! The Key is in G Dorian! The tonal center is definitely G not D!
