I have the original by Laura Nyro but Renee Fleming's version is something beautiful to behold. Her vocal phrasing is just exquisite.

This Spanish album of Connie's absolutely great. I think I have all her US albums. But so many came out on TV or were just compilations ofothers that I could be wrong.

I used to tease my best friend's dad, good naturedly, about this being his favorite song. "it's such a standard dad song", we would say. He laughed and turned it up as he drove us along the back roads in Ohio. 5 years later, they played this at his funeral. He had taken his life, after things fell apart due to his undiagnosed mental illness. She and I had ended our friendship a year or two before, but nobody could have stopped me from being at the funeral. When they played this song, I wept. She wouldn't speak to me at the funeral, but afterwards she texted me and thanked me for coming. I told her I loved her, and she told me that her father had considered me like a daughter. I think of them often. Ben, it was a privilege to know you, even with all of your demons. I wish you had been given more chances. I wish life had been kinder. I wish you had stayed, for your daughters. They loved you so much, and your loss has changed them forever. Emily, I love you. I always will. I play this song often, and think of you and your father. I hope you're happy. I hope Julia is thriving. I'll always cherish our girlhood together, no matter how things ended and how we ended up.

God’s angry man, His crotchety scholar Was Saint Jerome, the great name-caller Who cared not a dime for the laws of Libel And in his spare time translated the Bible Saint Jerome - the Thunderer Quick to disparage all joys but learning Saint Jerome thought marriage better than burning; But didn’t like women’s painted cheeks; Yeah he didn’t like Romans, didn’t like Greeks, Saint Jerome - the Thunderer Hated Pagans for their Pagan ways, Yet doted on Cicero all of his days. A born reformer, cross and gifted, He scolded mankind sterner than Swift did; Saint Jerome - the Thunderer But he swelled men's minds with Godly leaven It takes all kinds to make it Heaven Worked to save the world from the heathen; Fled to a cave for peace to breathe in, Promptly wherewith for miles around He filled the air with fury and sound. Saint Jerome - huh, talk about the Thunderer! In a mighty prose for almighty ends, He thrust at his foes, quarreled with his friends, And served his Master, though with complaint. He wasn’t a plaster sort of a saint. Saint Jerome - the Thunderer Can't get through life by just being nice Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ Love without truth is just sentimental Truth without love is sterile Saint Jerome - the Thunderer He swelled men's minds with Godly leaven It takes all kinds to make it to heaven God’s angry man, His crotchety scholar Was Saint Jerome, the great name-caller Who cared not a dime for the laws of Libel And in his spare time translated the Bible Saint Jerome - the Thunderer Saint Jerome - the Thunderer Yeah, the Thunderer Saint Jerome - the Thunderer From "Times Three" by Phyllis McGinley
