[Eng] I found shakuhachi sound more to nature sound, sound of wind breath and etc., some livelier, I think. I like it more. [Rus] Звук сякухачи кажется мне ближе к природному звуку, натуральному, менее шаблонному что ли. Он живее, подобно звуку ветра. Он мне нравится больше.

I honestly like both. The flute "wins" initially with its refined powerful sound and precision, showing its long line of evolution as a professional instrument. Shakuhachi on the other hand displays quite an amazing range of timbre. From breathy wood sound, to almost brassy, to clean ringing sound that western flutes are best known for. That being said, that particular flute is roughly a gazillion times more expensive than the bamboo instrument, which cost is primarily determined by the craftsmanship. So you could say that shakuhachi achieves more with less when compared to a golden flute.

Shakuhachi are actually very expensive if you buy a proper instrument. The prices for proper Shakuhachi made from bamboo usually start at around 2000 euros, from what I know.

Who is the composer of this piece?
@MegaVladimird
@MegaVladimird 6 жыл бұрын
If i'm not mistaken, the performer (his name is 藤原道山 - Fujiwara Dozan) is a composer. This album is called "san" or "praise". Also the name of this composition is "sanrai".

"Sanrai" and all other pieces on Fujiwara Dozan's CD "San" are composed by Yamamoto Hozan. This seems to be an abbreviated version; Sanrai on the CD is quite a bit longer, the middle part.

do people know shakuhachi only have five holes? the performer must constantly half close, a third close to do the chronic scales. so it really doesn’t do too well if it’s really a technical piece like bach. but this guy definitely outperformed the lady in this piece. the beginning solo part was everything. that was wonderful.

It's true, and playing the in-between flat and sharp (meri and kari) notes also requires angling of the head and flute along with changes in the breath. It's definitely a challenge to play chromatic music. Still, I think they both performed remarkably well

The shakuhachi player in this video is a player of the Tozan school of shakuhachi playing, one of the two leading schools. I know this because his first name, Dozan, is actually his artistic name, which he took from the Tozan school upon getting his teaching license. The artistic names of all graduates of the Tozan school end in -zan, which means, "mountain". Of the two major schools of shakuhachi playing, the Tozan school is the newer school, having been founded by Nakao Tozan in the 19th century, as opposed to the Kinko school, which was founded by Kurosawa Kinko in the 17th or 18th century, I believe. Before that, the shakuhachi was played by Buddhist monks of the Fuke sect. Anyway, the Tozan school, being the more recent and modern of the two main schools, is also the one that is most focused on modern music, although modern music has been played by players of both schools.

A good example of the contrast between the the two instruments; attacks micro intervals flexibility of sound (harmonic spectralrange ) in the shakuhachi are astonishing, whereas the flute in this piece is relegated to a more static and conventional tone color. Other western composers have borrowed alot from the shakuhachi"tone model". Nevertheless The piece is very well played...
