Very interesting. Alcohol burns cleaner than white gas. SO...QUESTION: Any idea WHY MSR states this is unsafe? (The flashpoint and ignition temps for alcohol are higher than for white gas which makes alcohol technically safer.) MSR also states that alcohol will damage the bottle which is hard to believe unless they mean that that alcohol will degrade the o-ring seal faster. Ideas?

The issue with geting alcohol to burn in the stove, as it is, is the venturi is too large (there is too much air coming in the large holes on both sides of the brass center piece) and the reason you would need to increase the hole of the fuel jet (more fuel to mix with the air). The same metering (balance) can be achieved by decreasing the air. I have used (on occasion) a piece of foil, folded to about 5/8-3/4" wide, and maybe 5-6" long, to wrap around the brass center piece of the stove, covering up the large holes on both sides. Then take a tent peg to poke two holes through the foil, one on each side (where the large holes are covered) and use the same jet I use for white gas. The tent peg ends up making a hole about the size of a pencil, for reference, maybe a little smaller. The issue with burning alcohol isn't what mods you have to make to the stove - its that the alcohol eats up the inside of the pump. I guess the plastic MSR uses gets dissolved over time.
@scott11527 ай бұрын
Full disclosure: I have the Whisperlite Internationale, purchased in 1988, which uses a different pump than used today so there may not be the same issue with using alcohol..
@antonyheisler14537 ай бұрын
You suggest there is not much kerosene used or available in your area. You would still have diesel everywhere. Diesel and kerosene are perfectly interchangeable in heaters, stoves, and furnaces. The same applies to home heating oil and jet fuel. Jet fuel is just very pure kerosene. You can run diesel in an oil furnace perfectly but it's more expensive because of the road taxes applied.

The stove stutters on alcohol because it draws too much air. It is easy to add air control to the stove using a 16mm wide brass tube drilling a hole through it (the size of the air inlet), cutting it open on one side, bending it open and close it around the air inlet of the stove. This modification is sufficient to burn alcohol (with the UG jet) and you wouldn't even lose warranty, but if you wanna get a big flame, you need to do the drilling too.
@itrstt669 ай бұрын
i got confused a midst of the instructions... how does the cut and bend part plays off? and where would that tube go?
@BlauerTeeLp9 ай бұрын
@@itrstt66 just look at this to see what I meant: etrike.wordpress.com/2012/11/20/msr-whisperlight-alcohol-mod/ With the newer whisper Lite I think it's impossible to just slide the air control over the inlet holes, so you have to cut it open on one side and then bend it around.

I made a permanent one out of a piece of brass pipe. I had to sand the inside of the pipe to make it fit snug. Drilled two holes on each side the same size as the brass center piece holes. So I just line up the holes for normal use, and then I can twist the pipe to gradually close the holes if needed for alcohol. Otherwise its just a piece you don't even notice/use. ****do not attempt to adjust the air intake during use**** It will be very hot.. =)

@@itrstt66 Sorry, I was out of town.. Purchased a small piece of 5/8” brass pipe (internal diameter) from hardware store (12” long) You could also use copper pipe.. Marked the pipe for length (0.500”) but did not cut yet because I wanted to have the length while drilling the holes on both sides. Holes on each side pipe were drilled with (27/64”) drill bit (you could use a 7/16” bit). Then I cut pipe off to the (1/2”) length and started sanding a little on the inside to make it round so it would turn smoothly on the center piece of the stove. Also sanded down the outside just to make it less thick, but not necessary for function. Assembled the stove holding the pipe in-between the legs during assembly, and put the primer pan back on.. Pretty simple. If you have the access, you could weld a short piece of brass rod to turn it a little easier, and maybe during use to fine tune the flame, but also not necessary. For me the opening needed for alcohol is about 1/3 open (2/3 closed..). Internal diameter - .625” Height/Length - .500” Holes - .425” Thickness (not really relevant) .075"

Cool project! Just as a friendly comment - alcohol will react chemically with aluminum (and eventually cause pitting / damage).
@campinghack06755 жыл бұрын
Joshua Johnson I’m not sure about that chemical reaction. I am sure alcohol will displace water, water which would accelerate oxidation on reactive materials in the presence of heat. Anyway I had fun getting alcohol to burn in this stove. There is no way MSR would honor any warranty and I accept that fact. Be super cautious with mod it has good potential to be dangerous. Have fun!
@the_guardians_of_the_universe3 жыл бұрын
Yes, alcohol with eaten out aluminum and also plastics. But I'm sure the plastic quality of MSR fuel-pump is the very hard one, it'll take decades for alcohol to eat the plastic pump out. Also one of the ways to anticipate this is to use the lacquered fuel-bottle, 1 good product is the fuel-bottle from Primus. One other thing about water, there will surely be some percentage of water left in the fuel-bottle, or in the fuel-line, or in the jet chamber. We can get rid of this small percentage of water by using petrol as a fuel for some longer time. It will flush the water out.

So not the stove itself is affected but only the fuel bottle which is a lot less expensive when damaged. The reaction between alcohol and aluminum is very slow at room temperature. There wont be any contact between hot alcohol and aluminum, so i guess you just shouldn't store the alcohol in the aluminum bottle for extended periods of time. Considering all this, this seems not at all like a no go or big risk to me.
