The slight west you’re seeing on the new bearings just be from measuring. Nothing worse than paying a shop to do something and having to go over the work yourself. I feel that’s become the norm these days. It’s forced me to do more and more myself even though I’m pressed for time always. Side note: I hope you’re not running that 20w-50 in the Disco
@GoodPeopleMotors4 күн бұрын
@@sarahdell4042 it has definitely become the norm I learned though doing this. The same happened with the headliner, it looks fine but he didn’t do a good job, id like to redo it. No some people suggest 20w 50 all over the Facebook groups but I tried it for 30 seconds before the rebuild and immediately drained it out and went for a spec that matched the measurements I built the engine to and what’s recommended by LR.

@@GoodPeopleMotors I’m not sure why some people recommend it. Must be an older mindset… I’ve owned Discos since the 2 was new and only once ran 20w-50 and it was by accident. The motor is so much louder and less responsive.

Brown wouldn’t have been my choice but i do like the lighter color roof. Ties the D2 to its earlier Land Rover siblings. A lot of Discos are rusting away. The saddest thing is a one in good mechanical condition with a rotted frame (I saw one recently). Nice to see someone restoring these.

Very cool! I've been eyeing Nomad wheels for my Discovery. What sizes did you go with for the wheel and for the tire? Can you tell me more about the adapter? Is this required for Discos? or was it for your preferred offset/spacing?
@GoodPeopleMotorsАй бұрын
@@RajJesudason-e7d i went with 17” 5x130 +50et thus the adapters as nomad doesn’t offer a 5x120 in 17”. You could go with 18” 5x120 and they’ll bolt right up but that wasn’t enough tire for me. In summary 17” 5x130 +50 offset with 265/70/17 tires. Then 30mm adapters to make them fit is my setup

Slapdash work, you got royally screwed..... and with how fragile these engines are, they need to be done right. That block needs to be fully stripped down, properly cleaned, and inspected , especially for liner shift / leakage around the liners. This is how these become endless money pits, one cheap band aid repair after another, instead of a total teardown and ACTUAL rebuild....

Yup, it’s going to a new shop finally found a guy who knows these engines and cares about his customer. He’s checking everything, crank, rods, pistons, liners, heads, the whole works. Engine should return clean and ready for assembly. Stoked about it!

I bought my slightly used 2001 D2 18 years ago when it had 50k miles on it. Over the years did head gaskets, air bags, three amigos, blah, blah blah...never actually broke down or stranded me, always got me home and now as I cross the 200k mile line my plan is to do a complete overhaul and install the Turner top-hat liners that I bought a couple of years ago. Bottom line - I'm never going to let my Disco go but let's keep it a secret because I'll buy them for $1200 all day long.

@@ahuidog3711 it was an additive marvel mystery oil added into the engine oil. But it’s not a good solution to the problem. You could try running a 180* thermostat if your temps are high 200F+ that helps with sleeve/piston distortion and may just fix your problem if it’s not wear related.

I said it once I'm going to say it again. It's time for an M57 engine swap! Parts for the swap are pretty cheap, especially if you source an older M57 from Europe. I just bought a land rover discovery 2 4.6 with 146k on mileage is very low mileage for a 20 year old D2 , from copart from arizona wrecked front end no air bag deployment, all easy fix on body repair,, replace passenger fender, hood ,grill radiator front bumper i will pull out innter fender support bracket, it already coming out nicely, I will need to undo all tact wells to replace the meat that hold radiator support bracket and both headlights and hood bracket bent, previous owners said it runs & drives so far won't crank only bumps engine not sure why I tried jumping d2 same thing not sure if jumping won't work because it's needs new battery anyway im planning a 5.3 LS swap from alternative conversion engineering kit it just makes more sense for reliability plus endless parts for LS i will keep my current transmission so all offroad features work im sure you saw the loss cause ranch viedos makes the conversion go easy plus they offer the wiring harness xtra , i often wonder if the lr3 engine and transmission would work in a D2 but nobody wants to be always working on a rover but enjoy what a discovery has to offer both front & rear solid axles, easy to install a lift no shop needed my rear sunroof opens & closes but won't go down to close 😮 very straight, i thought about rebuilding the 4.6 engine but i don't want future problems anyway good luck on your issues

Time to swap in a M57 engine!
@mcleodmarcel487 ай бұрын
You better check those cylinder sleeves before you put the engine back in. if I were you, I would just re-sleeve the entire engine. I know it may cost a little more but those are known weak points in that motor. Also the new up-to-date cylinder sleeves won’t come out like the old ones!
@GoodPeopleMotors7 ай бұрын
Everything appears to be good with the sleeves. I’m more worried about the head bolts stressing the block by removing and re-torquing, my understanding is that this is more likely the cause of sleeve problems. The sleeves are seated on a flange at the bottom. Unless they’re not deck height at the top there’s nowhere for them to go. That being said I’m willing to eat my words. If I do I’d swap to an m57 or LS. Hoping House of torque makes a v8 compatible ECU.
@gerardmccarthy24325 ай бұрын
@@GoodPeopleMotors I torgue mine to the old 3.9 non stretch torque. I think the risk of pulling the threads from the block a bigger issue that will lead to internal coolant leaks.
