My ears perked when you mentioned dental care. Can you (or anyone on this thread) recommend a dentistry office in Costa Rica? I am looking to get some procedures done there to save money and checkout the country as well. I have been hearing wonderful things about for years! Thanks in advance! Eric F

Native Costa Rican here, this applies to you because you're a foreigner and you've probably got the only thing ticas look in a man: MONEY. If you're a local, you better show off your fancy clothes, expensive car and if possible, hang a $100 bill on your face if you want to have a minute of their attention.

You must live in a very sad world if you seriously think that money is the only thing that Ticas look for in a man... Sure it will apply to some but certainly not to all.... Or. maybe you just hang out in the Hotel Del Rey every night?

LOL !!! -- Here is your video summary, folks: Costa Rica is great ... , except for: 1. noise - with great weather, you leave the windows open, and sounds comes in. 2. noise - barking dogs is common. 3. noise - fireworks and firecrackers go off during a few celebrations. 4. noise - music is often heard from restaurants, bars, and homes. 5. noise - car horns can be heard in traffic. 6. traffic - the locals don't drive the way they did back home. 7. smoke - gardeners often burn refuse, as opposed to filling landfills. 8. noise - truck engine braking can be heard, instead of destroying their brake pads. 9. politeness - the locals should be more opinionated and confrontational. 10. envy - can't stand seeing old guys getting young girls, even for money/gifts/favors/fun. This is probably from an over-the-hill, female, New Yorker. I haven't even been to Costa Rica, but obviously, this "analysis" is a total joke. This actually makes me WANT to go to Costa Rica. Perhaps that's the point.

The noise issues you mention are very prevalent in Mexico also. I was amazed at how noisy was out in the middle of nowhere....You never feel like you are getting away from it all... deep in the middle of a jungle or a remote mountain top.... people in these little shacks play there mindless music at distortion levels... roosters are always crowing ...dogs barking...donkeys braying, and truckers tune their exhaust systems to be as loud as possible. They use their Jake brakes to slow down for speed bumps and there are speed bumps everywhere. Sounds like a combination of machine gun and cannon.

Atenas is definitely the "Hot Spot" for retirees from the USA. I am not a big fan of Atenas, but I do admit that Atenas is a great place for many potential expats to consider. Google "Atenas" and what you can expect from Atenas will quickly become clear. Atenas is a Gringo retirement community. There are tons of real estate agencies who will happily sell you land or a home in Atenas. The weather, yoga, the park, etc. are the primary attractions. I've been in Atenas twice, and on both occasions, my impression was "Stepford." If you want suburban USA in another country, then Atenas is your place... and that's OK. That's what some people want. One expat's comment on a Costa Rican expat website said it all (paraphrased)... "The airport is 30 minutes away and the beach is 45 minutes away." Lots of expats don't really want to live in Costa Rica. They just want to live in a $1 Million home with quick access to the beach and the airport. If they need to go out or shop, they'll drive their BMW into San Rafael de Escazú for dinner at Saga, a few beers at Hooters, and a little shopping at Multiplaza... and then quickly head back to their enclave in Atenas before they are contaminated by the Tico culture.

I just GOTTA disagree with Michael Simons on this issue... I don't consider 6 months to a year worth of rental expenses to a be a waste of money... I consider it to be an investment in research. Of course, your Rental isn't going to be the house of your dreams... you're just scouting the area. Even just moving around in the USA, I often experienced, "Oh, Wow! Did you guys realize that this fantastic venue is over here?" I consider a "boots-on-the-ground" rental to be an investment in my future home. Personally, I would NEVER buy a property when I first moved into an area. I'd much rather do some scouting, and then choose a home that I can Really live with.

Thank you VERY much for this video. A big help to me. The complaints of your your friends and business associates are exactly the same complaints of my family members who moved to Southern Brazil. The same disturbances, especially regarding noise, mistreatment of dogs (animals in general) and lack of consideration. Hence, they moved back to the US to Sarasota, Fl where it's almost too quiet!

+Scott Oliver New Zealand: none of these problems there. Switzerland? No. Germany? No. Australia? No. Northern Italy: only loud church bells. France: No. Spain in most areas: not any more. Thailand: not much. Neither one of us live in a cave. I lived in Mexico in 2013, San Miguel de Allende, and yes! Insane noise, fireworks and disturbances. Trash everywhere. Cars dumping their home trash in fields. Again, your video was a big help in make a decision. After Mexico, I'll take a pass.

I had to visit the ER while receiving dental care in Costa Rica, for the exact same reason I visited the ER in the states. The Hospital in the states charged 15 times more than the hospital in the states and provided poorer quality care, in that they did not help me resolve the trouble in the states, but the doctor in Costa Rica gave me dietary advice and helped me to feel more comfortable and resolve my trouble.

+living the outdoor dream This is needed information for those (educated) persons who are considering a move. Very helpful. This has nothing to do with the ugly american expecting other cultures to accommodate him or her. For example, think of all the people who live abroad who are not fluent in that culture's language in a few years! Now talk about arrogance and the ugly American! I sure agree with you!

I guess for people who has never been outside the country yes they need to know that other countries have differences in their culture and daily lives but it seems like these people were complaining about it in a way. but its just logical... latinos are more lively and charismatic people and countries with a poor infrastructure and economic status mean cities and towns are not going to be as quiet, clean and organized as American suburbs. and withought all the extra government services like animal control well that's means there is going to be a lot of hungry stray animals.
@higherresolution4490
@higherresolution4490 8 жыл бұрын
+living the outdoor dream Thanks for your good reply. Definitely agreed. (I can't find your comment on KZbin, but I received it via email.) And of course, there's huge abuse of animals here in the USA. Latin countries don't corner the market in that department.

TRANSLATION FOR VIDEO TITLE: Costa Rica is Alive
@higherresolution4490
@higherresolution4490 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Since when is incinerating trash and dumping trash all over the place being "alive". Since when is abusing dogs by chaining them up all the time and ignoring them being "alive". Since when are explosions a sign of life, and not of death? And how about horns? Costa Rica is typically Latin, like Mexico, would be a better way to put it. All humans are alive.
