In the mid to late 70's, I would sneak in to the track. I would park on the north bound 5 freeway shoulder, and walk through the bushes, jump over a drainage ditch, then hop over a 3 foot tall chain link fence and I was in the pits! Perfect VIP parking! I went to all of the fox hunt's, 64 and even 128 funny car meets, and NHRA events. It all ended when, for an NHRA event, about 40 cars were parked on the side of the freeway, and the CHP had a line of tow trucks towing all the parked cars. I had to pay for parking that day as well as admission, the end of an era. Good times!

This 'Dodge Safety Sherriff" was at our high school in 1970 .He presented a driver safety program for the students and faculty.Those mopars were really tops before the energy crisis.🙂

I think John's parting words at the end here are similarly aligned with Jeff Gordon. The wonder kid once hated by 2/3 of NASCAR Fans. But over time won the hearts of many of them for his grit, talent, tenacity, and contributions on and off the track. Everybody just wants to be appreciated and loved. Even by the haters.
