I'll watch this sort of sequel to Godzilla Raids Again any time that it's on...one of the funny things about it though is how they make Godzilla vulnerable to electricity, yet he acquires electrical powers in Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974 film). I really wish the Godzilla channel would get access to the movies you mentioned that Criterion plans on releasing.
@mischieftales2586
@mischieftales2586 2 ай бұрын
Agreed! And I love that this movie is a direct sequel to Raids Again, considering that Godzilla emerges from the iceberg he was buried in. The electricity component is also fascinating when you understand that it was all because Frankenstein was the intended monster! The Toho Frankenstein we eventually got is such a wild character; I wish that creature had crossed paths with Godzilla at some point.

Always been a fan of Mothra, and never really viewed her as an antagonist. And now that Pluto has the Godzilla channel, I always binge watch the Rebirth of Mothra series, which kind of gets silly after the first one, but they're still enjoyable - particularly as you see her powers grow from movie to movie. The Godzilla channel also plays both American/Japanese versions of the original Godzilla, and sadly, IMO, the additional footage with Raymond Burr really ruins the flow of the movie. And you can catch Yongary on either Tubi or Roku for free.
@mischieftales2586
@mischieftales2586 6 ай бұрын
The Rebirth of Mothra series is wild! And also refreshing in a way to see Toho make kaiju movies without Godzilla in it. As for the American cut of Godzilla, I think it's fine if you meet it on its own terms as a more action-oriented monster flick; but I agree that it's a totally different flow from Ishiro Honda's original vision. And thanks for the heads up on Yongarry!

Irish co-production???? No Irish company involved - just a bit of location shooting which involved renting some local equipment and hiring a few local technicians to run it (the absolute minimum required by union rules) - 5 days total (the intended night-time location shots were filmed in London to avoid paying extra Irish union staff). Most of the film was shot in 1959 - there was virtually no English/Ireland animosity in the southern Ireland. A lot of the 'British' crew were London Irish. Cigarettes in films - in the UK it was just something to do between lines - a lot of actors needed a cigarette in their hand to fiddle with during scenes.

I liked this movie a lot, but it doesn't translate well to home video. I saw this at an art house with some sick hipsters, and the blood looked more realistic, the gore much more believable. My advice to anyone watching this at home is to view it in black and white.

The making of this movie is actually more interesting and freaky than the movie itself. Hitchcock was notorious for abusing his leading women- and he had a thing for lovely blondes. Remember when watching The Birds that real, live terrified birds were thrown into the actress's face! Her terror is completely genuine.

There's a couple of subversive plot points you guys kinda missed- They have a commercial showcasing how the moon has a huge anti-meteor defense ring of guns to shoot down any inbound rocks. The bugs have no spaceships- so there's just NO WAY the bugs could have plotted a course to strike Earth- from ACROSS THE GALAXY. Without faster than light spaceships, the rock would need millions of years to hit Earth. It's not the typical bad science of Hollywood - they're showing us that the attack was a "false flag". The military made that meteor hit Earth to justify a war. That anti-meteor defense ring was no where to be seen- and it's very convenient that the shit with Carmen on it wouldn't have encountered the rock at all if she hadn't revised the navigation course from the one they were supposed to follow. It's also intentional that Buenos Aires is a paradise of all white people in a country that (in real life) became a safe haven for Third Reich officers fleeing prosecution after WWII. It was also very intentional that they had a black man whipping Rico as punishment- and that his sergeant had endured such a lashing himself. The entire movie is based around American WWII propaganda films like the ones Ronald Reagan starred in- you're not really watching a story about characters as much as you are a recruitment tool for the military- so the youth of the actors and their generally stilted performances actually add to the overall look package. I think they should release a version in black and white with a few film errors and skips to make it seem like the actual WWII propaganda films. It would hammer home the concept. Have you guys done The Mist yet? Ohhhh Man. THAT'S a movie worth watching for monsters and maybe even a Kaiju thrown in for good measure!

Vincent, when you guys did this review, was it based on the original Japanese version or the Americanized version with Raymond Burr? I've watched both, and the original language version was hands down better than the dubbed version IMO. For me personally, the added scenes with Raymond Burr disrupted the flow of the movie and really didn't add anything to it.

Speaking of model work, I thought that scene shot from the inside of, what I'm assuming to be a conference room with Godzilla approaching, was pretty cool. My favorite part though, was when Mechi-King Ghidorah appeared out of thin air, and then his transformation when he landed on the ground.

I think the original idea pitched for this movie was that Frankenstein was supposed to battle Godzilla, but that idea didn't go over well so it was changed to Baragon. Also, there was supposedly an alternate ending filmed where Frankenstein would also fight a giant octopus, but the octopus starred in the opening scene of War of the Gargantuas, the "sequel" to Frankenstein.
