Starring down a head gasket job on mine… it’s had a tiny oil leak out the front of the engine which seems like it must be coming from head gasket. Then a couple months ago I started getting oil in my coolant but no coolant in oil (or at least seems like none). I figured oil cooler. Replaced that and flushed everything. Still getting oil in coolant. So either I didn’t flush it good enough or head is leaking. Also oil level has been slowly dropping. Not sure if it is coming out front more or into coolant. Figure probably time to do the head gasket, level the head, and throw a AAZ mls on with arp studs, valve seals, etc. Worried I’ll run into a surprise like cracking though. Debating on doing everything myself to save on labour but I’ve never even timed an engine so this might be over my head. How crazy a job is it on these motors? Anything to look out for?
@OliverFetter14 күн бұрын
Gotcha! I think pulling the head is pretty chill honestly. You'll feel like you're gonna mess it up till it's done and everything works but it's not too bad at all. I have a full engine timing video posted if you need it. You don't need to move the pump so no need to mess with injection timing. Set the motor to TDC before you take it apart so you don't have to worry about that either. If you have a cracked head ignoring it isn't a good option 💁so might as well see what's good. If you don't have pins/alignment dowels in the block that the gasket can sit on, it can be trickey to keep it in place, but you can always use tape around the edges.

Also make sure you order the same thickness gasket you already have (1 2 or 3 notch thickness)

I’ve been trying to decide what to do for an intake manifold… the stock 1.6td mani loves cylinder 2 and 3 a little too much but there doesn’t seem to be an easy solution?
@OliverFetter18 күн бұрын
Yes! Quite the predicament. The affordable option is to look at other 8v gasser intakes (there was quite a few) and some of them can be a bit better in terms of distribution. OR you can opt for a tdi intake manifold but the ports won't be a smooth transition unless you port the head to match or maybe just glob the corners with jb weld??
@chrisladouceur409318 күн бұрын
@@OliverFetter I thought about TDI manifolds but they're D shaped, right? Seems like it would require a lot of work. Perhaps a custom flange could be made to transition from the D to O. I have heard a lot about 8v gassers being a great solution... but that you need to flip the exhaust manifold, flip and clock the turbo, grind away at both until they fit.. and even then it works on a MK1 but on a MK2 one of the turbo outlets will be up against the rear motor mount. I've got a MK2 so I'm not really sure the best way around this. Internet seems to be full of mixed information. What did you settle on doing with yours? I've got a head gasket job coming up so hoping to have this figured out by then so I can get it all ported nicely
@OliverFetter18 күн бұрын
@@chrisladouceur4093 yeah exactly they're D shaped. That's where you could probably mold the corners of the manifold to be 0 shaped with some jb weld maybe instead of porting the head. Generally speaking yeah ya gotta make some changes to fit different manifolds. I have a tdi intake manifold & a mk2 or mk3 exhaust manifold and there was plenty of cutting and welding involved lol

Its not linkage its boost controller. By bypassing vacume solenoid your vains are fixed . So by unscrewing rise your just allowing vaccum to leak wich keeps vains closed more than normal thats why you get quicker harder boost and the other screw, the boost one lets the pressure out as the nains no longer adjust , nothing is slowing down boost. So ur turbo working at max and just leaks boost at the level u set it.
@mvp27221 күн бұрын
Turn the rise 7.5 times. The thing is veins need to work off solenoid. U turning the vnt into a normarl turbo.

Are you running stock length dynamic advance piston?
@OliverFetter27 күн бұрын
Likely not? The base of this pump was a giles build... Of course that doesn't mean much because he doesn't ever tell you what is upgraded 💁💁💁 but I'd assume he builds in more dynamic advance. What kind of options are there?
@austinmaxi27 күн бұрын
@@OliverFetter There's fitting a shorter timing piston, that would allow higher amount of timing sweep from idle to red line..to a point, as the pin that goes through the roller cage into the timing piston hits the limit of the cut out in the casing. There are factory tapered pins about that will give a little more travel before hitting the case. Or you could dremel the slot more.. bit too invasive I feel though, and probably too much advance. Easy way to see if you can get more advance would be to take the end caps off and fully advance the timing piston to see if it protrudes past the casing..and if it would bottom out if the cap was reinstalled. (Some VE pumps had recesses to allow the piston to come out into the cap) if the cap blocks it you could swap pistons or.. easier fit a dynamic spacer between the case and the end cap. Pretty popular with 200/300 TDI landrovers as their timing advance is pretty tame. I did this when I fitted the wrong piston in my pump and didn't want to take it apart again. Gives you roughly 4-6 extra degrees of dynamic advance I think. Might be enough to be able to set your timing back to get low end power and still have enough timing up high. Either way seems the Giles pump doesn't have quite enough timing advance up high..
