Honestly, looking at things like this, it feels crazy to even think about the fact this was the reality and everyday way of life for hundreds of millions of people, my parents included, just a couple decades ago. It feels so distant and vivid, especially strengthened by the grainy TV cameras... And even if you do neglect everything else, it is a very aesthetically pleasing world at the very least. Clean streets and buildings, no billboards, no ugly grafitti, great architecture (YES, break the stereotype of Soviet architecture only being living blocks of cement), great symbolica, etc. And my favourite part about it all has to be the fact that all Soviet symbols, songs and even the movies, feature-scale productions that took millions of rubles (1 Soviet ruble is like 10 dollars of modern day money), are *ALL* public dominion, free to be used and uploaded at the whims. Truly, Communism has transcended its own death, and I love it.

@ Population grew during whole era of Soviet Union. During the era of Mao China population literally doubled. Alliance with the Germany was necessity, same as western powers allied with Soviet Union against the Germany. Same as western powers are allied with Turkey or Saudi Arabia or Israel. Anti religious sentiment is just a policy its not necessarily bad. Churches were known for exploitation and massing immense wealth so its understandable. There were many atrocities but most of it was during Stalin era, were it was seen as threat to whole state. Stalin methods were denounced after his death same as whole gulag system. You need to consider the fact that at that time USA still had racial segregation, so it wasn't perfect everywhere too. Bread lines is taken out of context, we could say that in capitalism we had lines for toilet paper during covid too. Generally there were no bread lines and it was very cheap so in some cases people would feed farm animals with bread. There were inefficiencies and bad things same as with every other system. It doesnt mean that its fundamentally bad. It had good infrastructure, good city planning , free healthcare, free education, free summer houses and many other programs which were way ahead of its time. Considering that overall technology was less advanced and land was devastated after ww2 we simply cant ignore its achievements.

Today I had the unpleasant experience of watching combat footage of the current war in Ukraine. Seeing the soviet era buildings, full of debris, destroyed, soldiers that a few decades ago could have called each other brothers shooting each other and even engaging in close hand to hand combat, all for the enrichment of a few bastards. Watching this video hurts.

Putin has locked up (and unalived) more political prisoners and journalists from 2018-2024 than ever under Brezhnev, Andropov and Gorbachev combined. What an embarrassment. Now i understand why the older generations say the USSR was a better time.. what a shame and waste of another generation of Russian men.
