@@paulchristie9170 Hi, great question. The () indicates that the note is ringing out from the previous measure. So no, you don't pick those, you just let them ring.

That's so awesome and I'm glad it was helpful. How is playing the guitar coming along for you?
@reedhewitt6 ай бұрын
I'm making progress little by little and having a lot of fun. Chord transitions are the hardest part for me. Picking melodies comes a little more naturally, but I'm struggling to incorporate more than just the main notes from the melody. I think I know the answer though... more practice. 😄 Do you think it's a bad idea to focus on fingerstyle techniques before mastering the basics of rhythm guitar?
@JoshSnodgrassLessons6 ай бұрын
That's great that you're having fun, that's the main thing when you're starting out. About chord transitions, there's a cool exercise to help with that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJyaZZSso7GdocU -It helps, I actually still use it sometimes when I'm dealing with chords I don't normally use. About adding more than the main notes from the melody, you might just try playing the base note and letting it ring at each measure or chord change and then playing the melody over that. It's simple compared to a lot of fingerstyle music but it will give you the structure of the song. I expect it would also be a good challenge/exercise for you. As you get more comfortable you can add in some harmony notes to the melody. I often do this just by picking 2 strings with my 2 picking fingers (instead of just the melody note) and I often just use the adjacent note in whatever chord I'm playing. -It fills it out a bit. Eventually you can work up to arpeggios. About your question, I don't think it is a bad idea to focus on fingerstyle before learning rhythm guitar. The art of strumming is pretty much useless in most fingerstyle arrangements. It's a completely different skill and it's not really that relevant. I'm sure there are some great fingerstyle players that aren't very good strummers. I was a rhythm guitar player first but I hardly ever strum now. I hope that helps.

@@JoshSnodgrassLessons Thanks for the advice! That chord change exercise makes a lot of sense. I'm going to start incorporating that into my practice sessions. And that's really helpful to have some ideas for the first steps beyond the single note melody.

Josh, I recently came across your KZbin hymn site. I absolutely love it. I am a 72 old starting out to learn guitar for probably the fourth or fifth time in my life. I can strum some cords and play few songs. However, what I have always wanted to do is play the melody of hymns with some picking, exactly what I hear you doing. I love to sing hymns but being to play them one day would be a blessing. As I grow in my capabilities I hope to make use of your lessons. Thx for what you, David

Why are you only picking one string when the tab when the musical notes say three
@JoshSnodgrassLessons8 ай бұрын
Hi Doug, that's a good question. I looks like I goofed up there. You're right that on that first beat I should be picking the lowest string for the bass note of that G chord and then the 2 highest strings at the same time but I didn't do that there for some reason. Sorry about the confusion.

Hello Josh. I really enjoy your music. Question(s) about the tabs. I’ve noticed a red 2 on the low E string. When I slow the video down I don’t see you playing it. What does the red number mean? Are you playing that note? Thank you. God Bless!
@JoshSnodgrassLessons Жыл бұрын
Great question. I am using a "drop D capo" so the red 2 is actually a "minus 2". It is the string left open by the capo so it's 2 frets lower than the capo. I know it's confusing since I am using that unusual capo but I think it's awesome for making it easier to play the chords and melody at the same time.
