The rest of the story was that they moved the punch bowl and all the shine ( Jackson was from Tennessee) out on the lawn and after the crowd followed it out they shut the doors and locked them. Hundreds were literally passed out on the lawn! Jackson had a tremendous following from the rural south not only did he lead troops against the British at New Orleans but also in many Indian conflicts there after in the 1820's. He parlayed that popularity into a run for the white house.

Well if you look back in time to Athens, Greece they used to have a full democracy which turned into rule by mob.

Even up to WW2 you could go to the White House and get to see the president if you had an appointment .. there was no security that kept people out

Yeah what people don't realize is our founding fathers didn't found a democracy they founded an oligarchy. And they weren't themselves great examples of the ideas they espoused. But I believe it's those ideas, those founding principles we should be greatful for. But they themselves really didn't follow them. And I've come to realize it's absurd when people say "that's not what our founding fathers intended". WHY DO WE CARE? Who amongst us make our life choices based on what are great grandparents might have chosen? Even those of us who value the advice of our elders still grow up and make our own decisions. This isn't our founding fathers' nation. It's ours. And our decisions should be based on what we want not what our founding fathers would have wanted.

TECHNICALLY, it wasn't the British, it was their Allies, My People, The Haudenosaunee AND it was ALSO justified. Though given the United States' "wonderful" education system, you likely heard a VERY DIFFERENT narrative than the actual truth. You attempted to invade Canada, and annex Canada in 1812, and the British and their Iroquois Allies basically decimated your beyond arrogant armies, pushing you further and further south until we reached Washington, and burned the White House to ashes. You surrendered and backed off hours later, putting an end to the war. You basically fucked around and found out. Given the idiocy your "Leader" is talking these days? Don't let him write a cheque he's going to try and make YOUR asses cash!!! You don't learn history, you're doomed to repeat it! And REPEAT IT is often the rule! 😂

We need major reforms. I like the British system of elections. Each candidate receives the sane amount of money and the election is a set period. None of this Elon Musk giving $270,000,000 to one candidate.

The funny thing is Andrew Jackson was definitely up there with terrible presidents. He was basically a really corrupt, enslaving, genocidal party boy, and the American people loved it.

It's because of Netflix, plain and simple. Most people watched Friends, Frasier, and Seinfeld when they were on. But not The Office. I watched the first episode of The Office (Season 1, Episode 1) in July 2018, more than 5 years after it went off air. I have since seen each single episode at least twice.

If I were to build a country from the ground up, it would be more or less modeled on the US, but that 100% is something I would change. Voting rights would absolutely not be automatic. I also don't think I would go the "landowners only" route the early US did, because while I agree that becoming a landowner yourself typically demonstrates understanding of the world and the systems at play, some people inherit land and are still dumb. I think I would have 3 requirements. Highschool education or equivalent. You must pass the same civics and history test required of immigrants to become citizens and you must pass a brief test on current events every 10 years. Nothing difficult, but something that ensures you understand both sides of every major issue in the current political landscape. Lastly, mandatory 2 years of military or civil service. You either serve 2 years in whatever military branch we need you in, or 2 years as a volunteer firefighter, police auxiliary, mail carrier, just anything that gives 2 years of service to the federal government so you get a better understanding of how it works, and to demonstrate your willingness to work towards bettering the nation, and not just for your own good.
