Thank you for the video! I was going to guess $10-15K but everything adds up fast. How much did the gaming inventory cost? Another 5K?
@BoardGamingwithEducation14 күн бұрын
We opened with about $8K in inventory (at cost) since we started online and did local events first and invested in another $15-$17K upon opening, and have been steadily adding to that number over the past two years and now fluctuate between $65K and $80K in inventory. When looking at how much inventory you need to open to be profitable my suggestion is this formula: (Total inventory at sale price * turn rate) * profit margin vs. your operating expenses

I watch a bunch of these "opening a store" videos as we prepare to open our own. These guys waste so much money on things they don't need or can just do themselves. Tv installation? Shelve installation? Plant for the bathroom?
@BoardGamingwithEducation14 күн бұрын
I kind of covered that in the video. I ended up needing a rush installation and there is a huge markup on a business install versus home install. Planning can save a lot of $ and this is one of those tiems I did not plan accordingly. I could have probably figured out how to install them myself, but it would have taken me at least a day or two since it is not really in my skillset and I would of had to learn. Any kind of contract labor, especially in CA is quite expensive! The ability to install a 4'x8' 80+ pound piece of slatwall is not possible to do on your own. We are a business even if we wanted to get some help from a friend, we are still a business and need to pay for labor. We didn't want to open a "Mickey Mouse" game store with a table and chairs. Plant was free and donated by sister-in-law. I would love to hear a brick-and-mortar store in a large metro area that can open today for under $50,000 and survive several years! I don't think that is possible anymore. Feel free to come back and share your update on your opening! We would love to hear it!

We’re still here! Year 2 is just around the corner in April. I was actually in the middle of typing up a business update for our newsletter. Social media, especially KZbin has taken aback seat in the past few months with all sorts of other things going on. We’re planning a convention with a couple of other game stores in the area and if you’re curious about behind the scenes business stuff we’re launching our VideoCast on Friday @LFGCon on KZbin.

Nice to see another game store looking out for their community. I have managed a small store for almost a decade and I feel like I am watching our early days as a store and hearing about the same struggles and victories we have all been though. :) An idea for liquidating your Jumpstart boxes/boosters, host a learn to play event that is the same price of three boosters. Have the players mash two jumpstart packs together, as they are intended to be used, and play a swiss tourney with them. Then you can decide to award each player a prize pack for participating, or distribute the packs to those who finish x-1 or x-0 in the event. If you dont already, and it sounds like space is limited, but talk to your distributors about donating a few freebees to help with learn to play events. Then you can also have door prizes and give people something to walk away from outside of the cards they got from the two packs. Sometimes you have to gently let down the people who show up looking to spike the tournament, and if that happens, then just award the packs to each participant. Some people just see an event like this as an opportunity to walk away with 10 or so packs for the price of 3, and at the end of the day, that's not the spirit of what an event should be about, ever.
@BoardGamingwithEducation Жыл бұрын
Hey Alex, thank you for the suggestions and insight! I think jumpstart is actually an excellent product but it wasn’t executing very well with Dominaría and the upcoming Brothers War. It would be a much better product if they threw some cards in their that magic players wanted as well as being a good beginner product. We do offer a pretty flat prizing structure. 1-3 win a little more than the rest of the players and we always do a fun game and raffle at the end of the event. Usually first is excluded from any raffle at the end too. We might try to pull off some cool holiday gift packs for different gamers. We’ll likely throw some jumpstart packs in there too. Hope that helps us move some product as well!

Glad you tried out the kiosk first before full B&M storefront. Don't worry about the distro being slow when you apply, they'll try to take care of you. You're going to keep seeing some of what you found in the kiosk true in the store. Especially Tuesday being a slow day :). I'd have liked to hear ballpark numbers on what the costs were at the kiosk, but understand you not wanting to share. Keep on keeping on, solid video, looks like you're starting with a decent selection of product so far. Hope all goes well for you, man :). Lastly, will your B&M be named BGE's Tabletop? If not, make sure to plug your store name next video :) (unless I missed it)

There are some great tips and ideas here. This year, I was lucky enough to have an Apple TV box installed on the projector in my room, so I could put my phone on a tripod and point it at the City of Zombies board and project it where everyone could see it without having to gather around the board. I also developed Physical Distancing rules for our own Mathemagician's Duel, so that students could still play against each other without touching the same cards. My room for next school year doesn't have Apple TV, but the projector also isn't mounted to the ceiling, and has a a USB input. I'm hoping I can plug my phone directly into it to be able to project. And based on your recommendations here, I'm definitely also going to see if I can get a class set of white boards!
@BoardGamingwithEducation3 жыл бұрын
Glad you found some tips helpful! I’ve loved using the individual white boards. Just finished another class where we played this block-building game called “Bilder” I think it’s getting a new publisher and a new name. There are some cool cards that require different types of communication. Also, need to check out your socially distance rules for Mathemagician’s Duel!

Middle school math teacher here ... great topic and good discussion. I am often jealous of LA and history teachers in their ability to incorporate student interests so easily into their curriculum. I think it is more challenging for the math teacher. But I love board games and I am looking for opportunities to hit curriculum topics with games in the classroom. Of course advisory provides another gaming opportunity and Wavelength looks like a great option. Thanks for the insights!

Hi Dan! Thanks for the comment! Math is definitely not my forte, but I’ve seen some pretty clever games out there for teaching math. Check out Mathemagician’s Duel! Or Math Rush and Math Fluxx! I’m not sure what level your students are at, but I know when I was tutoring students last year when the pandemic just started a couple of the students I helped could definitely use some help with multiplication tables and finding a game that helps them get in some repetition with that is awesome. Also, I wish I had the game Mathemagician’s Duel when I was introducing negative numbers. Though, the game isn’t made for it you can modify it a bit to demonstrate how adding negative integers work. They’re working on a second edition of the game too!
