Thank you for this informative and fascinating discussion. I have been interested in Fragile X since 1989 when my husband and his mother were “tested” for this at Rutgers University because his brother is autistic. The results were extremely confusing as not only my brother-in-law but my husband and mother-in-law tested “positive “ although neither are autistic. We were subsequently told the results were a “false positive” and went on to have four children, one who is now a PHD like his grandmother who was diagnosed with mild ADHD as a child and one with mild anxiety. Interestingly, my husband, his mother and two of our children, (one now a physician and one a piano prodigy), have very high IQ’s. I can see the negative issues that tend to run in Fragile X families but I see some positive traits as well.

Not dx but I have quite a lot in common with Carol from the story. I hated my father at times growing up because he was so horrible to be around. He never gave any positive encouragement or tried to help me succeed in any way as a child, but was angry & critical most of the time, mixed with just straight ignoring me and contempt. He was a minister and was very benevolent to others out in the community, so I found the contrast hard to tolerate. Later in life he developed Parkinson’s Disease like his father had. I found it hard to have a lot of sympathy for him because of his treatment of me while I grew up. I had three children two with autism and one with adhd. I now think there is a good chance my father had fxtas. He had some potential phenotype features with prominent ears, and flat feet. Also signs of adhd. I have even wondered if my mother has it on her side or if my father’s father as well as his mother were carriers. All grandparents had normal intelligence but there was a lot of depression, anxiety, alcohol abuse, prominent ears and mood disorders. My son was dx with autism and tested for fx though and the results were described as ‘normal’. We have so many markers though its hard to believe it won’t be present. My cousin’s sons also have learning disabilities and her father was my father’s brother so I suspect my paternal grandmother was a carrier. I just have a feeling it is rife in the family and would not be surprised if I found out 3 grandparents were carriers. My brother seems to have escaped and has no obvious markers which would suggest my mother probably has one fx X and one normal X that he inherited while I likely inherited her fx. She has high blood pressure, varicose veins. I suspect I inherited carrier mutations from both parents.

This fellow instead of critisizing the caste system should talk about exploitation but after going abroad is a opportunist pawn playing in the hands of abrahmic agenda he should have used his energy in removing vices in indian society . He should have been respected if he had stayed in India and worked towards removing all the exploitation of the poor instead of playing in the hands of Christianity / Islamic agenda. Is Dr suraj biased? Is Dr Suraj not neutral? The upper caste does not have reservation though you find them in high posts. Is it because of their hard work and value for knowledge? I really can't believe anyone still reads Derrida. I studied with Gayatri Spivak when Derrida was at his peak reputation. She was terrific, for sure, but not even her mesmerizing teaching could make me take this seriously. Read Quine, Russell, and Wittgenstein instead.

All India should be benefited to listen to this notable lecture. It seems to me that the Indian media mostly from the middle class and upper middle class (read middle caste and upper caste) still reluctant to address this inhumanity- this will be India's undoing and shame if it wants to be recognized as a world power.

I'm reading when I can Wittgenstein, Boethius and Baudrillard when I read philosophy. Just read Camus's 'The Fall'. All this you can all ignore.
