@hittingperformlab have you seen any of Jamie Cevallos’ stuff, the swing mechanic. He talks about lead arm dominance. A lot of the same concepts that Perry is discussing here. I’m really interested in swing mechanics having never felt comfortable or confident with my own swing (played D3 shortstop). I’m hoping to give my kids a better experience at the plate. They’re 8 and 6 now. Really looking for the best structure/theory of the swing. Great stuff.

Great video. Hitting mechanics should be developed in an attempt to intersect the bat/barrel with the ball trajectory with optimal force. If you leave humans alone, they eventually will figure this out on their own. Look at hammer throw or even swinging an axe…..many of the same movements as a quality baseball swing. I don’t know what you think of HLP hitting instruction, but the proponents of it seem to misunderstand numerous kinetic concepts and the specific movements that made Hank so successful. It’s not popular to question HLP in this day and age, but one does wonder why strikeout ratios are so high. Is it simply because of dominant pitching? Or is it because HLP has lead us to less efficient swing planes? I have my thoughts but would love to hear yours.

I agree 100%. HLP is ruining hitting. It's making swingers NOT hitters. Adapting barrel paths to specific pitch locations is what the old timers did. You can't swing up (HLP) to an up fastball and expect to be 100% on-time, on the sweet spot, with your best swing more than 1 out of 25. After looking at Judge's stats on all pitches, if all he saw were up fastballs, change-ups down and in, and sliders down and away, he'd hit barely above Mendoza with 3 jacks. Rich is a con man. He's taught the same old thing for so long and has gotten lucky grabbing some of the talent he has. Why don't you ask Bellinger how well HLP teaching worked for him the last 3-4 years with the Dodgers. Poor guy couldn't hit a belt high fastball.

Joey I know it’s relative to height, arms but do you have guidance on the optimal point to be on time with an arm extended swing? It has to be more out front but how much?
@HittingPerformLab

Good question. Perry says on an inner third pitch: contact must be 1.5 foot out front of the stride foot. I figure anywhere between 6-inches to what Perry says. It all depends on how well the hitter can control the barrel while swinging "down". The closer the ball is to the hitter, the more "down" to swing.
@paulkelly8428
@paulkelly8428 4 ай бұрын
@@HittingPerformLab thanks. is the assumption then that the reaction time that you lose swinging more out front is offset by a faster swing speed?
@HittingPerformLab
@HittingPerformLab 4 ай бұрын
@@paulkelly8428 the swing speed will be the same whether we're hitting a middle in versus middle out pitch. With zero or one strike we're hunting a zone. Depending on the zone being hunted, the barrel path (up/down) will be determined before the pitch. We're being being proactive with zero or one strike, not reactive.

Watching this again so another question, keeping the angle between the hands and bat, how do you keep from dragging the bat through the zone? I was hitting with my son and kept hitting balls off the hand side.
@HittingPerformLab
@HittingPerformLab 3 ай бұрын
@@paulkelly8428 the hitter must keep control of the barrel with the top hand. We use top hand bottom three finger pressure to help with this (pinky, ring, and middle). Hitter squeezes those three fingers when he/she picks up the stride foot and squeezes hard all the way through impact into the finish. We also control the barrel by using a swing "down" feel. Especially on middle in and middle up pitches. Another term I like to use is "skip the barrel across the table without touching it." Imagine the ball is coming in on a table (could be sitting on a tee), and we want the hitter to skip the barrel across the table without the barrel dropping and bouncing off it.

Tebow needed a good hitting instructor to work with him except there aren't that many good instructors in the majors anymore. Launch vectors, exit velocity, etc are over emphasized these days. He needed refining of his mechanics. He's White Knuckling his bat, which i don't see how you missed it. He also needed work on his strike zone awareness from what i could see from other videos of him from minor league games. If Tony Gwynn had been around when Tebow was active, he'd have become a solid 4th OF/1B/DH.

This is bad. Your swing is armsy/handsy. Just keep the hands up on the shoulder and dont let the arms or hands reach out to the ball. Instead TURN THE SHOULDER as if youre trying to hit the ball with that back shoulder because somebody attached your hands to your shoulder and is not letting you use your arms. This will keep connection. Also, teach hitters to hit the ball from below and from the inside. Hands above the ball but bat barrel below the ball.

To any and everyone you have to listen over and over. Perry throws gold like it's pennies...(approx 4:00) describing kinesthetic awareness of the barrel. East Carolina did research on the eyes and came to the conclusion that hitters are at their most efficient (my words) when their tracking of the ball matches closely to the flight of the ball (realize each eye has a separate view of the pitch) and thus doing only one thing - "hunting shape, location, and ev" makes the task more efficient. For those who are ignorantly and disrespectfully saying that this is creating hitting mimics then you are not understanding. In fact, current teach/instruct creates the same hitters with the same flaws more or less. When you understand what is happening with ev you are unlocking the potential for every hitter to perform to their best and most efficient movements. Thank you Coaches, this has been awesome.

The Mick and Willie, both slugging their way through their respective leagues, running like the wind, and patrolling center field just a mile or two apart across the East River from each other. Has there ever been a duo like that?!!! Maybe Lou Gehrig and Bill Terry? Mattingly and Keith? Neither pair can match Mantle and Mays. Oh, and the third best out of the three NY centerfielders in that era was no slouch either!!!

This might be the best swing analysis I've ever seen, thanks! I've wondered for a long time why Bryce's Max Exit Velocity wasn't more elite. 116.4 mph is his career best from 2019 & I know it's nit-picky to act like it even matters next to the numbers he's produced & 2 MVP's he's won... His swing has just always looked so picturesque & pretty to me that it feels strange trying understand how many players there are who can generate equal, if not stronger, force with a bat with while having much more effortless or less powerful looking swings

100% There's a tumorous hitting philosophy out there that is setting hitters back decades. It's the most popular for many misguided reasons. Guys hitting the ball 110+mph can be hitting the ball 120+. Guys like Judge and Ohtani have a high hard hit rate but a poor sweet spot %. Guys like Arraez have a poor hard hit rate but a great sweet spot %. Can you have both? YES! And then there's BA, which some people hate, but it's a metric. Back in the day, we'd see 30+ guys hitting .300 by the end of the season...today? Maybe 4. What's going on? As Mark Twain once said, "If you find yourself on the side of the majority, then you must pause and reflect." Baseball and softball hitting coaches MUST pause and reflect. When these pitchers figure out @PerryHusband Effective Velocity, the hitters still doing this popular hitting philosophy will die out like the dinosaurs, or will be forced to adapt.

No one can swing like this today. He wasn't facing guys throwing over 100MPH, 90MPH off speed pitches. If all you want to do is hit the ball farther, your explanation may make sense on a theoretical level. But you will never be successful in the long run without staying back.
@HittingPerformLab
@HittingPerformLab Жыл бұрын
I hear you, but "staying back" is a relative term. It will help a hitter who lunges post stride landing. Staying back in its extreme will cause uppercutting. Lots of this being taught on KZbin. Look at Trout, Otani, Cabrera, etc...they ALL have forward movement. They're decent hitters. Addressing fast pitching today versus in the past...watch the Fastball movie documentary. Back in the day, the radar gun or any velo calculation was closer to home-plate. Nowadays they aim the radar gun out of the pitcher's hand. This is the fastest moment for a pitcher's velo. In the documentary they have a Physicist dispel this myth you're referring to. Walter Johnson (Ty Cobb era) when calculation was adjusted threw something like 93-mph. Bob Feller (Ted Williams era) when calculation was adjusted threw something like 106-mph. Nolan Ryan (70/80/90's) when calculation was adjusted threw over 107. Aroldis Chapman was at 105-mph. Two pitchers, one from the 40's and 50's AND another from the 70's through the 90's both threw faster than Chapman.

This is all true but those of us who saw Gwynn play heard him talk about this very thing. He knew all of this. There was nothing missing with his swing. His approach was intentional. Hit the ball hard where he wanted to. Get on base. Move over runners. Put the ball in play. He mentioned numerous times how he could have sacrificed hits for more Flyballs outs, lower batting average, strikeouts, etc for a few more homers. Then there would be a page in the book on how to Gwynn out. As it was there was no page on how to get him out. He would have hit 350 against a shift.
