It was the de facto anthem for a hundred years before it was replaced in 1931 by the Star Sprangled Banner. It has the same tune as "God Save the King". So, perhaps when you sand this in school, it was with different lyrics. All the best.

The melody continues to be used for the national anthem of Liechtenstein, "Oben am jungen Rhein", and the royal anthem of Norway, "Kongesangen". The melody was also used for the national anthem "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" ("Hail to thee in the Victor's Crown") of the Kingdom of Prussia from 1795 until 1918 and as the anthem of the German Emperor from 1871 to 1918, and as "The Prayer of Russians", the imperial anthem of the Russian Empire from 1816 to 1833. In Switzerland, it is known as "Rufst du, mein Vaterland". Now, that is really fascinating!
