Reverse does not use electric motors only. All the weight shifts to the front end when backing up a hill which allows the electric rear motor to spin the wheels easier and we all know the CVT trans can't spin front wheel drive wheels in reverse. Get a clue.
@benweber31 Жыл бұрын
The transmission doesn't have a reverse gear. The vehicle can only go backwards via the 2 electric motors. These are MG2 and MGR. The gas engine only acts as a generator when the vehicle is in reverse. The gas engine cannot turn the wheels in reverse, ever. This is fully explained in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWeUiJyegreXoK8

@benweber312 жыл бұрын
In forward motion with the gas engine running, MG1 regulates the ratio of the transmission. If MG1 is completely stopped, the ratio is 1:1. This happens at about 60 MPH. The engine power goes directly through the the transmission to the front wheels. Only in reverse and EV mode is the vehicle only moved with electric motors only(MG2 and MGR). Sometimes the vehicle will be in a sort of EV mode with the gas engine running as a generator. This happens at slow speeds only. I'm guessing this was with the stock suspension that's 'sport' tuned? Or is that just the 2022 XSE Hybrid? If yours does have this same suspension, how was the ride quality while off road?
@benweber312 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's stock sport suspension. I actually prefer the stiffer ride off road. It's a little more bumpy over the little bumps. But there's less chance of bottoming out with the big bumps, which I like. Plus if you want to drive a little more sporty, it feels great. Even with the big heavy tires, it's pretty fun in the corners. There does seem to be some sagging in the rear suspension. I've read that is normal over time. I've driven long distances with the weight maxed out so that probably didn't help. I plan to replaced the rear springs at some point. But with 86k miles so far, I'm not complaining.

That is lights, radio, wipers, A/C, and other built in systems. He does that to show that the charge system is built to handle at least that.load. I have never previously been able to verify if the RAV handles that safely or for a long time. 1.5kw is about 120amp so you just proved it. Now I wish I had gotten a bigger inverter. @@ryangoodman949 Awesome! Let me know if you get the vibration at 25 mph. People seem to be having issues going above 1.5" lift. I personally believe, bases on experience, that suspension droop is more important than lift. You will lose some articulation and comfort with a lift as you will hit the upper suspension limits more often. However, most people get lifts for looks. In that case, I'm all for it. But for actually gaining off road ability, I would argue against it. I do plan on replacing my rear springs soon. Over the years, the rear springs have compressed and sagged a bit. This is most likely from carrying heavy loads often. Others have complained about this too. I will probably replace them with the OEM springs. Which will restore the factory ride height. I've considered getting stiffer springs for the back, but I like the way the OEM springs feel. I have the XSE which has the sport suspension. The springs are still pretty soft, but the shocks and sway bars are a little beefier. Perfect for some sporty off road driving.

Subbed. I have a 2022 RAV4 hybrid XLE with BFG AT tires and I live by the sand dunes... I had a 4x4 Yukon before this.. I realized they aren't the same but I didn't realize before buying that the awd isn't a true awd... What settings would you recommend in deeper soft sand driving? It seems to do ok airing down to 15 psi and using trail mode with traction control off... I also use manual 2nd gear unless I start losing traction then I'll shift back down to 1st... I'm wondering in your opinion what settings would be best for soft deeper sand? Wondering also about vsc off and traction control off vs just leaving them on.. ideally I want all 4 wheels to spin always if I'm on deep sand and I'm not sure how to accomplish this (or get as close as possible) with the hybrid. Any advice is appreciated
@benweber312 жыл бұрын
You are correct. You want your wheels to SPIN in sand. Traction control off is a must. Airing down to 15 is perfect. Keep the revs up in "manual" mode. If you can turn off VSC with the "maintenance mode" that should help. I forget how to do it but it's the thing where you press the brake pedal and start button a certain sequence. I think just pressing the VSC button only disables it temporarily or partially. Keep in mind that you will be able to overheat in this mode, so I'm told. Get yourself an OBD2 wifi adapter so you can monitor all of the system temps in real time. It's cheap and easy. The problem is, when you start to turn in the sand, the VSC will kick in and start killing power or applying the brakes. You DON'T want this. Instant stuck. The problem we can't solve is the power split. The front wheels have access to over 220 hp and gobs of torque. The rear wheels get like 25% of that, and only temporarily. Once the inverter and battery heats up, the system goes into a gas engine only mode. Keep in mind that REVERSE ONLY USES electric motors. The gas engine will kick on to generate power only. You have MUCH LESS power going in reverse. If you are overheated, which doesn't take much in reverse, you will be stuck. I actually go in reverse INTO rough situations, so that if I get stuck, I can go forward in drive and use the gas engine.
@805BeachRecoveries2 жыл бұрын
@@benweber31 thanks for all that. I've turned off vsc by pressing and holding the traction control button for 5 seconds then it will remind me (constantly) that vsc and traction are off on the dash, even if I clear the message. I've read about the pushing the petal method of entering maintenance mode, although I haven't tried it yet (haven't needed to). I read that if you damage your car, they can tell if you did it in maintenance mode and won't repair your vehicle under warranty. I also read that Toyota engineering confirmed that reverse is awd... I don't know if that's something new in 2022, but I'll have to test to see if under any circumstances the front wheels engage while reversing. I've gone out and intentionally got myself stuck just to see what I have to do to get out and trail mode, vsc and traction off and manual first gear while turning the front wheels left and right seem to eventually crawl out. I haven't got ballsy enough to take it in anything super deep, and I feel I probably shouldn't because of the limitations of the car... But I'd say it handles up to moderately soft sand pretty well with the above settings and some know how about driving in the sand.
@benweber312 жыл бұрын
@@805BeachRecoveries AWD works in reverse. But it's only using MG2(front) and MGR(rear). There's no reverse gear in the system. This is true for all of hybrids like this. When you gun it in reverse and the gas engine revs up, it is using MG1 as the electricity generator. It sends electric power to the inverter/battery and powers MG2 and MGR. You can test this by going backwards up a steep hill like 30 degrees. Eventually you will have your foot to the floor and nothing is happening. Also, everything will heat up fast. I backed through some really deep snow doing this up a hill. The battery depleted immediately and the inverter/transmission got very hot. I've got a video showing this too if you are interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2K1cmSgYtuFqcU As far as the maintenance mode, I agree. Toyota could deny warranty work based on the logs. I personally have never done it.
