If you own a lake boat like that it's a good bet you know whet you are doing. She's a beauty.

I was fortunate to see this boat (right next to a Ford tri motor airplane and a large Jeep with a Ferrari 12 cylinder engine in it) inside a giant warehouse in Sparks Nevada when William Harrah was still alive - they were working on it and I was able to see the engines (from a P-38 Lightning aircraft) they said the originals were some kind of marine diesels it is and amazing work of art

I wish I could give this more than one Thumbs Up! Absolutely classy and beautiful boat.

Small correction, those are PT Boat engines. Related to, but not the same as Aircraft engines
@barryervin8536Ай бұрын
They are not PT boat engines. PT boats used Packard 2500 marine engines. They never used Allison engines. The Allison engines in Thunderbird came from a P-38 fighter plane.
@TheNecromancer6666Ай бұрын
@@barryervin8536They did? I thought the PT boats had the Allison. Thanks for correcting me.

Grew up hanging out/working at a marina as a kid through teenage years. Seen a lot of boat names. Some cheezy like a dad joke, some named as if they were a strong spirited person. The name of "Thunderbird" fits that vessel well. I like old wooden vessels.

No drama a true professional, tried to use the wind, with no help. Second attempt was perfect. These straight shaft boats are not easy in close situations, they do NOT back up straight. I have experience.

PT boats at the time were 77' - 80' depending on builder with three 1200HP Packard V-12s. What an amazing bit of history this boat is.

I had some friends back in college who had a big wood boat (not as big as this one) that they called the “earthmover!” It was awesome.
@chrishackett55411 ай бұрын
Straight shaft with rudder with a tailwind wanting to push the stern one way or the other. The slower you go the less headway for the rudder to affect steerage. I’d say this operator did an excellent job.

Before the V1710 aircraft engines, Allison actually built marine specific V12s - IIRC the made exactly eight of them. They were jewels of engineering, even more so than the V1710s in many respects.
