Years ago, I flew to Cancun, rented a car, and made the drive to Xcalak. You can find relatively inexpensive places to stay and chase bonefish and permit wadding from shore. There are also reasonably priced guides (facebook.com/captainvictorxcalak/). That said, a lot depends on your goals, comfort level exploring on your own, etc. Good luck and have fun!

I hope you have a great trip! I never found any great flats fishing, so I don't have specific recommendations. If you find any good DIY flats areas, please let me know since I hope to return.

@@kryspinwoszczyk3587 You'll need to ask permission where you're staying. Lots of resorts said no to fishing, but others were happy to have me fish, especially if I gave the fish to the employees/village. I had lots of chances at trevally, and you'll often find needlefish, coral trout, grouper, and reef sharks.

Your Cabo trip sounds great. I'll be heading to La Paz in January to chase yellowtail from the kayak.

I'm not an expert on jacks, but I have fun catching them on 4-6" poppers if they'll leave the structure to hit them. Otherwise, I've had luck jigging swim baits and casting divers as well.

My personal rod, which I caught the larger African Pompano on is a Phoenix three-piece medium-heavy weight, with a Penn 5000 with 50lb braid and 50lb mono. The other rods are from Loz Buzos, which I think are: Light "bait" rod: Diawa BG 4000 with 15lb Diamond braid paired with a Star Rods Stellar Lite 7ft 10- 20lb rod. The big setup for live bait is Accurate Fury 600 with a 6’6’’ Star Rods XXH 50- 200lb rated jigging rod. I think the mono on this is 80 or 100lb, with braid underneath.
