I own a Winchester 290 and my very first firearm was a WInchester 150 that my dad bought me when I was 13 in Alaska. (I still have it also.) I really wanted a Winchester 9422 but we couldn't afford one back then. Never had a lick of trouble out of either. I noticed your rifle was missing the elevation bar out of the rear sight. That is normal on used rifles from that period.

I have all 3 variants. Semi, pump and lever action. The early version listed short, long, long rifle on the barrel. They will cycle 22 shorts if it is a higher fps. Lower fps will have problems. Which is why probably Winchester removed 22 short from barrel. These guns have a tendency for the barrel nut to loosen up. Causing cycling issues. Easy fix just tighten the nut.

Low pressure loads from Polywad or RST off net. It’s probably dragging on your firing pins when opening.

We own a 49R, the repeater of this model...the gun has seen better days, sometimes it is a repeater, and sometimes it is a single shot...the barrel is pretty worn...we keep it as a family heirloom, and about once or twice a year we take it to the range...as much as we would like the repeating action to function 100%, we will accept the single shot if all we can get...two gunsmiths have done what they can, parts are nearly non-existent, so it goes...

Best deal I ever got on shotguns. Your gonna call me a liar but it's true. In the early 80s at a flea market in Colorado. I bought a single shot 12ga and a bolt action 410 for $4 each. I can't remember what brands they were. People in Colorado just don't hunt as much as people back east. Especially hunting with shotguns. That Steven's 9478 you have was the first brand new gun I ever bought. At one time I had the complete set of H&R shotguns. 10ga, 12ga, 16ga, 20ga, 28ga and 410.

Check for drag marks on the primers. Some primers, like Win-ch-ester are soft and the pins get stuck in the primer. Switch ammo and you might be able to open it without having to whack it across your knee.

O means cylinder 2 means modified 4 would mean full The action on the Western Arms "Long Range" made by the Ithaca Gun Co is very similar to the action on the Lefever Nitro Special and is one of the best made. Western Arms / Lefever Arms / Ithaca Gun was a lot like the Ford / Mercury / Lincoln division. All the same underlying company, just representing different price points.

@@RanOutOnARail It's a decision that you will need to make on your own, but I personally have no problem shooting low brass through these barrels. I have even shot low brass through Damascus barrels, but that is more controversial and prefer to shoot black powder when using a gun with Damascus barrels.
@VintagefirearmseriesАй бұрын
@@RanOutOnARail It is also a great idea to check the year your gun was made and the later it was made the more I would feel comfortable in shooting low brass. My shotgun was made in 1903 long after Nitro was being used and although Nitro was not as powerful as what we have today many use it as a guide.

Re: your comment on modern bolt 22's... The modern CZ 457 is very good quality, and comes in many different shapes and sizes. Basic models start around $450-$500.
@Vintagefirearmseries2 ай бұрын
They are a respected 22 from a modern time, but I really think some high end models in the past could comfortably out perform them. I once considered buying one of their models geared toward target shooting, but that model was discontinued. I would consider buying a Winchester 75 for less money or a model Winchester 52 for a bit more before buying a CZ. Once we get settled in here I plan on tuning up a lot of vintage 22's and seeing just what they can do. Thank you for your feedback.

I think you will like a episode I have coming up about a near mint 1953 model 336. A lot of changes at Marlin for sure and the ones I love the most would be the ones made in the late 1890's. I collect them from that era and they were the company that first started calling 30 WCF 30-30 until the late 1940's when even Winchester had to do the same. I have a Marlin Safety model 1893 from 1901 in 30-30 in wonderful condition. I have a Marlin lever action 22 in near mint from the late 40's or early 50's and all it likes to do is jam and so it stays in the vault. I have had it at the my gunsmith about three times, but it just acts up all the time. I have yet to fire the 336, but look forward to it as I don't think it will give me any problems.
