@@kaidiars im on team "daisuke can't have done anything if he didn't know", i guess. i get why anya wouldn't wanna tell him, the entire crew seems to kinda just treat him like a kid. but honestly as someone who's been in that kinda situation (intern at a workplace where everyone was older than me) its frustrating when older ppl assume you dont get it and try to hide stuff from you or assume you couldn't do anything. daisuke viewed himself as useless and the others around him treated him pretty much as dead weight. but i believe in him even if he doesn't believe in himself lmao ive already started writing the fic (ty for the inspiration btw XD) and basically its like. if anya was just a bit late and daisuke was a bit early. she's about to take the pills when she hears banging and screaming from the vent and it goes downhill from there. she didn't think anyone would actually come get her, especially not like this. she (bcos she actually knows what she's doing) manages to patch daisuke up enough where he's stable, and uhhh yea. theres more but i haven't thought of it yet

Btw, if you're interested, there's another great analysis on the game's themes done by a channel called stigmatawood. I can't put a link to it, because I fear youtube will auto delete my comment if there's any links in it, but I can tell you the title. It's titled "Anya in the Eyes of MOUTHWASHING (Wrong Organ video essay)", and the channel's name is stigmatawood, like I said.

I don't know if you noticed this while playing, but another detail of how awful the company and the working conditions are, is a poster that says that any infraction commited by an employee will be met with collective punishment. I guess the company's thought process was that this way no one will mess up or do anything they're not supposed to, but in reality this is extremelly shortighted, because it directly disincentivizes anyone from actually addressing or reporting any misconducts within the crew out of fear of getting punished as well and having their pay docked.

I think another one of the messages of the game is a cautionary tale about toxic friendships, how hard it is to spot the red flags unless someone from outside the friend group points them out to you. Oh, and also a cautionary tale about how absolute narcissists like Jimmy can go unnoticed and the damage they can cause others with their manipulation and gaslighting to satisfy their fragile egos.
@kaidiars
@kaidiars 12 күн бұрын
i definitely think i can see that but specifically in the vein of the way men are trained from a young age to ignore their friends mistreatment of women

@@kaidiars True. And also we can see Jimmy being toxic to Curly already since before the crash, with how he quite openly voices his jealousy and guilt trips him for "having an easier life than him". And Curly barely reacts because his long-standing friendship with Jimmy has gotten him accustomed to his toxic behaviour (especially if it's been incrementing gradually over time), to the point where he doesn't even register it as such.

Holdon I need to rant about how Ironic Curlys circumstances are real quick. And why I love his character writing. Or lack there-of So Curly, everything that happens to this man is a ironic reflection of what he did, or failed to do when dealing with Anya. The entire pre-crash sequence Curly downplays and ignores Anya, he effectively removes her ability to have a voice by ignoring it in the one role where its his RESPONSIBILITY to make sure his crews voice is heard, the role of captain. And imminently afterwards, the same thing happens to him. He has his voice, his humanity stripped by a crash orchestrated by Jimmy. He cant pull expressions with his eyelids, he cant frown or smile, he cant scrunch his nose in anger or pain and he has no voice. The same voice he denied to Anya. And all the while, the only person to even think about caring for Curly is Anya, he is the one suffering, and all the attention is just put on Jimmy, the same way Curly went to sympathize with Jimmy when Anya was suffering. Even Jimmy forcing pills down Curlys throat is representative of the S/A Anya suffered. Now, Curly stays this, inhuman object to the crew, Jimmy and the player. He appears more like a generic horror creature, like a doll. Even his gasp and chokes are considered inhuman. Until one scene. The point when you are forced to cut into Curlys leg is one of the most directly gut wrenching scenes in the game. because you have to do it. you have to GO THROUGH WITH IT. no scene cut to save you from the gore, no text to save you from the pain of his voice. You have to take responsibility for what Jimmy is doing. Like responsibility for the crash is pushed upon Curly. When he cries, its the first time you see real emotion behind his voice, barring the hysterical laughter when he listens to Jimmy click the gun case. But his crying has always invoked so much more emotion than just "ow my leg" It sounds traumatized, like inconsolable bawling of someone who's seen his friends slowly loose it, only to watch them die and rot. It sounds desperate and hysterical as if he's just realized the situation he's in, trapped, on a derelict freighter, out of food, surrounded by corpses and being eaten by a lunatic, who he trusted, enabled, and can't help but take responsibility for. It sounds pathetic, and guilt ridden for all that he's done. How he wished if he had just done better, he'd still be okay right now. The pain he feels is just an outlet for him to finally express these emotions, if he's going to have tears forced out, why not express all the things he's had pent up all this time? it almost sounds like he's laughing at it all. Its so different. Everyone else dies silently, out of veiw, we are spared the horrific details, but not for Curly. He MAKES us see it. its almost Ironic, we see the game through Jimmys POV, and the only time characters actually have a voice other than the monotone beeping of their text box, is when they're screaming in pain. because that's the only time Jimmy really cares. Though unlike Anya, who chose to die on her own terms, instead of succumbing to whatever fate awaited her, Curly is forced to bend to what Jimmy wants. He's forced to keep living, to be frozen in a cryo pod that most likely wont be found. One can only imagine that Curly would hate Jimmy by this point, but Jimmy beleives that Curly sees him as his team-mate, that they're the hero's! And they can make it through anything. Like a comic book. Sorry if this was sort of all over the place, or like, non cohesive, I just have a lot to say about Curly and himself as an almost literally physical inner reflection of Anyas turmoil. I probably don't even have all my thoughts written up here. Who knows I may sound insane.

don’t apologise this was super super interesting to read. i definitely see what you mean about curly being a reflection of anya it’s not some kind of weird “punishment” like i’ve seen people try to argue rather it is the same system he oppressed anya through taking him next in my eyes it shows that feeding into the beast that is inequality will only make it stronger when it comes for your throat. also i never noticed until you pointed it out that every character dies off screen that is so interesting especially considering the idea of detaching yourself from guilt. like we see through jimmy’s eyes as he pushes every one of those characters right to the cliffs edge and then there’s a sense of detachment when they fall. i’m not sure what to even make of that yet but that is genuinely so interesting.

@@kaidiarsThanks! It was really interesting to hear your take on the games meanings and themes of classism and how it can disvalue women and their problems. I’d always seen the game in a much more metaphorical and emotional sense, so it was nice to hear another view of it. On the topic of characters dying off screen, I could only assume it’s the games way of “sugarcoating” the crews deaths, to show how little Jimmy cares about them. The game can’t force us to not care about them like Jimmy, but it can put a blindfold over our eyes to make us think “it wasn’t that bad” And- I just thought of this and I may be looking way too into it but the section where Curly is canabalized is literally “your guilt eating you alive” or in this case Jimmys guilt eating Curly alive? I dunno it just popped into my mind. I could talk about this games meanings and story forever and still not be satisfied.

Warning! Long comment because I'm autistic and feel the need to infodump! See I always love watching these videos because hearing people's different interpretations of these characters and the story. I found myself agreeing with all of your takes. Honestly at the end of my play through the game Curly and Anya became my favorite characters of the story because I found myself relating to their experiences a lot as a cs/a survivor. The feelings of not being taken seriously but also being at the mercy of someone who is physically superior to you and you cannot fight back or even speak back against your abuser. It's why I always side eye anyone who says that either Anya or Curly deserved everything that happened to them in the game. In my own interpretation I think it's also important to also remember that Curly and Jimmy's relationship was pretty toxic and (again in my opinion) seemed to be pretty abusive towards Curly's end. Like during that scene of the birthday party where Curly let's the rest of the crew know that they all got fired, what does Jimmy do? He immediately tries to use Curly's feelings of dissatisfaction with his life he told Jimmy in confidence to try and manipulate the rest of the crew to become angry at Curly as if it was him who did the firing! And what does Curly do? Nothing. He let's Jimmy use his own personal feelings against him and just takes it. I think that scene really just captures their dynamic from before the crash. Jimmy both admires yet deeply resents Curly because in his eyes, Curly never struggled in life. And before I get anyone jumping at me, this is not me trying to justify Curly's inaction when it comes to defending Anya and keeping her safe. There's a really important saying I've seen people use in the fandom and I'm gonna use it here. "When a woman refuses to admit her husband is abusive towards her we feel sympathy for her, when she refuses to admit her husband is also abusive towards their children we tend to lose sympathy for her." One minor disagreement I have with your video is we never get any confirmation that Jimmy is an ex-convict. All we get told in the game is that Jimmy had a "struggle with life" before the job. Which yes could be with the law, but just as likely he could have struggled in other ways like with education or a poor home life. I actually like how we aren't told what the struggles were before he joined and instead had to make do with what we got. I just personally have issues with the fandom at large deciding it had to do with the law because I notice people tend to use it to demonize Curly, "He knew what Jimmy was like yet still gave him such an important job!" But also I feel misses the point of Jimmy. He's supposed to appear to be an every man, someone you work with and yet don't know his own deep seated issues. Me personally, making Jimmy an ex-convict kind of takes away what makes Jimmy such a good character. He's supposed to be an every day person you see in your daily life. Someone who you know had a hard hand in life and somewhat sympathize with their feelings over it, but also the way they handle it is a hundred percent incorrect in the way they do it when they get the chance to. Anyways sorry for the long comment, your video just left me a lot to think about. So here's some final thoughts. I like to headcanon that Anya is a gamer girl. Like she's got the cat ear headphones and loves playing Stardew Valley and Trauma Center.
