Stop sending this beautiful timber for pulping to make bloody paper there are plenty of lower quality resources for that available, keep the resource here and make something of higher grade and value from it, either for local consumption or export

Great points about achieving a 7 star rating! Thanks!

My self & my whole family lost our homes to wild fire as a result of a government blunder. My mum just got in before the new 7 star rating with a tiny home. Dad who is still homeless after 5 years due to poor handling of fire victims, was hoping to build almost the same home, but the new 7 star rating has forced him to reduce windows to poky little ones, face his home away from 30km of mountain views & face a sick controlled burning forest area instead & additional forced requirements has raised the cost of his build by approximately $100,000, on a kit home that was initially $60,000, so now his little 65sq m home will cost $160,000. We are not going to live long enough to see any savings contributed by the energy ratings. In fact the house will not last long enough to make $100,000 worth of energy savings. Every person who worked on this 7 star rating should be in jail.

This is all awesome, but how do I learn to use the software? I don't want to put an inadequate design in front of a paid assessor and then go through the iterations of making it work - I want to be able to use the software myself well enough to produce a design that meets my requirements, and then present it to an assessor to check my workings and certify it. It seems like the training options are do the cert 4 to become a qualified assessor, or ... nothing, really. And even if I did the cert 4 course, I wouldn't be allowed to design a house and then certify it myself and then build it with no other person checking over my design, so there is no benefit to me in doing the cert 4. I just need to know how to use the software.

Are you aware of anyone doing similar work with coco lumber? For building its a lower density hardwood but considered a waste product when building against cyclonic wind forces. Thai research shows this to be incorrect but its a better product than pine plantations for the tropics. Admittedly its because their native hardwoods were plundered for sale to countries like Australia. So they are left building with reo concrete beams. All else is illegal. It would be a great joint research project as a lot of your testing is via torque wrenched loads. Does UNSW have sister universities in SE Asia who could do that?

I have randomly come across this video as I have an interest in comparing different construction materials. I have been aware of CLT for some time and have seen some attempts at construction and I have not been impressed. I understand why CLT was manufactured as a logical gap filler between plywood and glulam with the benefit of the 'plate' idea as flooring. I am unsure if further floor/ceiling coverings are being applied but to this design has considerable 'force' encapsulated in a laminated panel this large with what appears to be little facility for expansion/contraction. A glulam beam is only really constrained at the ends whereas plywood has much thinner lamellas/veneers so the 'strength' is dissapated over the area. Over time I would imagine the CLT would move quite considerably with the seasonal changes, AC etc and could almost explode under certain conditions. In this example no sizes were given but the posts looked at least 300 x 300 (?) of CLT or LVL/LSL and looking at the 'Spider connector' I found that very confusing and probably horribly expensive whereas a m50 threaded rod stud could be just screwed down through the CLT and into the lower post leaving some projecting for the upper post to be 'spun' on like a nut. Metal threaded parts into wood have been used for centuries as tension pins in pianos for the strings. If this is just an exersize to see if CLT has a use then I don't think this it. The floor plates could easily made using sheets of Plywood laminated together for probably a similar cost and probably a leaner dimension. Just my opinion of a retired carpenter/joiner/luthier and not a tech. I do believe various laminations are the way forward for safe efficient residential construction and we have to see what works..

As a mental exercise, it is interesting. But in the real world, with vandals, the elements and the weight, it isn't at all practical. Hell, they have enough trouble keeping ageing concrete structures from collapsing. And who would insure it?

I believe my AK-47 stock and handgaurds have something similar. Thin sheets of wood laminated together and, when shaped to its final form, leave beautiful different colored wood layers and is super strong and durable for battlefield wear and tear resistance.
