This ugly monstrosity does not belong on Mullaghcarn or anywhere else. It should be demolished immediately. Our stupid councilors paid out a lot of our money to deface the mountain with such a horrid construction..
@david_v2.1Ай бұрын
I kind of agree with you up to a point...firstly it shouldn't have been sited so close to a prehistoric tomb. The other sculpture by the same artist in Davagh Forest is beside the kids playground, so maybe somewhere more easily accessible for the kids and disabled would have been better at Gortin. But I like the sculptures...public art is a good thing...it provides a sense of belonging, a focal point for communities and it's well proven that it reduces stress an social anxiety....besides, the masts and transformer station on top of the mountain are the ugliest of horrid constructions

I walked up the track from the A4 road. No gorse, and just a 5 minute trek up the hill to it. There were cows in the next field with easy access to the cairn field but they left me alone although I was very wary of them, always checking over my shoulder. The rain was constant and I was soaked and pretty pissed off...dropping down into the tomb is a tightish squeeze and I'm not overweight, might be easier for you as you look a wee bit thinner than me...once inside there's very little room to get decent footage, an extreme wide angle lens would be useful. The quartz walls were covered in a film of liquid mud due to the rain...better to go during a period of dry weather if you could plan it that way. I'm glad I had a change of clothes and XL cleansing wipes because I was muddy from head to toe...had to walk down the busy A4 road looking like a dug up zombie bog body. It’s one of three castles built in the same Norman style,built by De Courcey Earl of Pembroke before being recalled to England for his over spend,and completed by De Lacey. The Irish midlands and wales host the other two castles that are more or less the same. For a broad sweeping read of Irish history including the Norman invasion,Richard Kileen’s fairly recent paper back history of Ireland is the one to chase up.A real page turner written by a man who loves to write,rather than speak! There are later seventeenth century features to the Dundrum castle,and if you enjoy the “soul food”, of a good view on a clear day, then this is an ideal place to visit.

Another good share here,of some ancient Christian heritage,taking us closer to the current times.The 832 Viking invasion threat was countered in some older church grounds with the use of Souterains! Lurach is a saint I’m unfamiliar with,so if you could recommend a book or two on the subject would be interested in chasing it up!
@david_v2.1Ай бұрын
All I know of Lurach is what was printed on the information board...he founded a monastery at this site in the 6th century, he was a member of a local 'royal' family and his feast day is 17th February.

Good share,of a place that naturally combines centuries of Christina influence along with the presence of the Ancient sending Church. The old stables adjacent to the parish church were rejuvenated by a father and son team in 1998 over a very short time,who converted it into a brilliant stone Hall. The parish church of Maghera (Fort of the inlet bay) has a welcoming disability ramp,and hosts a Martin Luther window and a distinguished Aberdeen red marble baptism font. The light wooden pulpit and well kept sanctuary make this an ideal church for worship. There are even two stone plaques, in memory of the Rev’d Jack Finch and former Rector,Canon JD Caldwell. Services are generally held at ten am most Sundays. Maghera parish is one that comes into its own over Christmas,Easter and Harvest time.

Well, sites under State Care are usually tended by local councils and generally well maintained. At random sites like this one farmers would graze their animals and that keeps the grass low...other places I've been to are totally neglected and so overgrown that it's hard to even see the stones.
