Ambrose Bierce was a nihilistic Agnostic (very inclined to Atheism/Naturalism) due probably to personal experiences. Probably he heard many times about NDEs experience from wounded soldiers so he gave his nihilistic representation of an NDE (Near Death Experience) for a materialist perspective.
