What hertz setting are you using? Because that looks like a mismatch. Go into settings and switch it to the other (50 or 60) depending what you have now.

How do you like it? It seems like the license plates are unreadable most of the time? Not sure whether it is the KZbin compression or the fish eye lens?

The plates do not read so well compared to a standard view lens - but it does show good all round vision.

The clip is actually only here to show the video quality from testing the new dashcam - what happens in the video is purely coincidental.

I have the Vantrue N4. I’m trying to upgrade to the Viofo A229 Pro. Am I able to use the existing hardwire from my Vantrue onto the Viofo? They both use USB-C to connect to the main dashcam. I would assume it’s ok, but I want to make sure.

If you're talking about the 5V supply and don't need parking mode, it "might" work. The USB pinout used with Viofo is non-standard.

@ yeah I tried it out yesterday. It turned on and recorded, but I was unable to play back the video on the app. Says “failed to load”. When I used the included cigarette lighter, the videos worked fine.

Viofo will always be better since you can turn the other cameras off.

It’s very hard to choose and you haven’t shared your own preference. Personally the 70Mai looks slightly better having more colour and less washed out, low light’s a great test. Thanks for taking the time and effort to put this together.

Both of these are pretty shocking when it comes to what matters.. reading numberplate while moving. There's so much motion blur on both of them due to both of them being limited to 30 fps. Come on guys, it is 2024, storage costs are so cheap these days, there is no reason to be limiting us to 30 fps. Let us record in 60 or even 120 fps!

Hi Paul, I’ve used RoadHawk for years and they have a default date until they pickup the gps time code, could be similar with Viofo, once picked up they tend to store it for next time. I’ve just got some Viofo VS1’s, pretty good but when you “Lock the video” it only saves this minute, even if it’s just started a new minute whereas the RoadHawk saves the current, last and next minutes to make sure you had captured it. The trick is to save the video files while you remember or the unprotected files will be over written.

Hi Paul, Appreciate you taking the time to show VS1 image quality. You shouldn’t have detailed your firmware version, I had assumed it would automatically update when connected to the phone, no, you have to download it to a blank card and it installs during boot up. Then you have to go in and change all of your settings back again. I ordered a trial batch of 7 so I think I will leave the others on January’s firmware for now. The older cameras are all RoadHawk, tap the button and it protects the minute and before and after. Disappointing that “Lock the video” only saves the current minute. I was disappointed it couldn’t pick out a number plate at 30mph, so have increased the recording bitrate to see if that improves. Many thanks

Subscribed! Hi Paul, What would you pick in regards to the clear footage? I'm struggling to pick one in-between those two dash cams. I saw some KZbinrs mention that Vantrue N4pro is better than Viofo a229pro. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thaks for the sub! I'd still go with the Viofo. Updates to firmware are released when needed - the Vantrue has had just 2 since launch and I am srill not really happy with mine. So I's take the A229 Pro.

I've really only seen comparisons with the Viofo A139 Pro, which is the older model. And that's how i found this video. Seems like the A229 is definitely an upgrade over the previous A139 but I'd like to see the night comparison. As that is what i heard the Vantrue N4 stood out over the older Viofo. Edit: Viofo A139 not 129.

Looking forward to the availability of it in my local store. I hope the new large heatsink inside can deal with the weather in my area. My local distributor has refused to bring in the A139 pro 3 ch earlier due to heat issue. I wonder how is the bitrate? For 3 ch? Does it affect a lot like a139pro?

Thanks. Any value in fitting the interior cam version if not a cabbie? Some say it gets you side window info but in hour video looks limited? And does it detract from bitrate of front and rear cams?

You don't need the IR if you have no specific use. You can see through sides a little as well as out of the rear window, and you can pick up number plates, but it is essential for monitoring inside (passengers). The bitrate I understand should be 57Mbps in 2CH configuration. Otherwise expect around 36Mbps.

I noticed that the plates look significant better at night. During the day with oncoming traffic, it looks like the plates from those cars seem blurred but when parked they are fine.

It's the implementation of HDR that does this - better in some instances.

Only the front can do 60fps while a rear camera is connected.

I'm trying to decide between the A129 Pro Duo and the A229 Duo and I was leaning towards the A129 Pro Duo because of the 4K front camera vs the 2K in the A229 Duo. From this video it's hard to tell if it makes much of a difference but I'll look again from my PC instead of my phone. Which would you get?

Pause the video (best on your computer) at 27 seconds, for example, and check the license plate clarity on the BMW. Then let that help you decide.

I honestly couldn't see much of a difference on my 1080p laptop screen and then I watched it on my chromebook with a 4k OLED screen and the license plate on the A129 Pro Duo was clearer. Since you own both, which one would you get, the A129 Pro Duo or A229 Duo, if price wasn't factored into the decision? The price difference isn't much now (Oct 7, 2022).

@@PaulIddoninPreston Thanks. My thought is that it's better to have the higher resolution in the front camera to capture the detail in case of a hit and run. If god forbid I get rear ended, the lower resolution rear camera on the A129 Pro Duo will still capture the license plate. Ideally it would be great to have both 4K front and rear cameras or 4k front and 2k rear and I expect Viofo to release a dash cam with that configuration at some point.

Thats attributable to the not "overly" clean interior of the windscreen. After a good clea of the glass, it would reduce the flare quite a bit.

@@paulsdashcam9307 OK, now it's at 1080p. So far I like the colors of the A129 Pro the best. The A229 I can see the contrast of the sky vs. the clouds, and number plates look a little sharper, and less blurry. The A139 doesn't look good to my eyes. Did I get any of that right? lol

Oh yeah, I have a feeling it doesn't matter to you. But, if you want your videos to be fully rendered in the highest resolution when they "go live" on KZbin. Upload them as "unlisted" and give it about 15-30 minutes, then play the video, and adjust the quality setting icon to see if it's avaialable at the highest resolution. When it's at 4K, 2K, or 1080p (or whatever the media is) then change the privacy setting to "public". -Chuck

Yeah I spotted that when I looked! The FW is actually about locked files but on the forum I have that thread re: shadows, so I added this clip under the 2.9 to look at shadow and light again.
