You're messages would have more listeners if Michael got a better microphone set up - terrible audio disparity between him and Mick. Mick is clear as a bell. Michael muffled and bad quality audio.

Has anyone ever written a novel that illustrates the principles of REBT? Do you think that it’s a good idea?
@mickberry164
@mickberry164 17 күн бұрын
I think transforming our demanding thoughts into accepting thoughts is a common theme in many art forms. Novels that come to mind are: The Great Gatsby (The pursuit of wealth doesn't necessarily produce happiness.); Invisible Man (One can attain peace of mind under extremely difficult circumstances.); Moby Dick (Obsession can kill you.). However these are not blatant lessons in letting go of demands; the theme is interpretive. But REBT can be applied in the interpretation--as I just did. I do think spreading REBT ideas is good, regardless of the medium.

Very good points by Mick about missing the should/must and practising smartly.
@mickberry164

Thanks. It's astute that you recognize that. I've talked to many people who conclude that REBT doesn't work. When I inquire how they applied it, REBT not wokring is invariably because 1) They did not practice it much. 2) They were not good at finding the "should". 3) They did not passionately dispute the should. 4) They missed the secondary should ("I must not think irrationally.") Living rationally is living with the most potential for happiness we can give ourselves. Any anxiety/depression/rage is due to a demand. Find the demanding thoughts, rip them apart, retain your passion and pursue it, while not demanding to have it. That's my one (and only one) suggestion for happy living, which beats any other rules I've seen anyone else devise.

@@mickberry164 Thanks for your great response! I absolutely agree on all the points you have touched on. All of the four reasons you mention to guarantee that REBT fully works are important, but 2 & 4 -- I'd say -- are particularly slippery and elusive for some people. We'd better make sure that we grasp them 100%, and the same goes for USA, UOA & ULA -- we can apply them in each and every scenario in our lives.

I thought it was I nteresting what Ellis says about Trauma in Overcoming Destructive Beliefs, Feelings, and Behaviors : “Traumatic events sometimes severely disrupt protective checking mechanisms that prevent turning desires into demands. If, for example, a youngster is fairly well controlled in taking care of herself physically or tending to her school routines, and she is traumatized by rape, incest, or physical abuse, she may stop her self-controlling habits and almost uncontrollably resort to disruptive behaviors”

Thanks for this guys. I've found it, unlike most of Jordan Peterson's output, very straightforward and discernable. To me, Peterson's theories and opinions are most often extremely woolly, confusing and cloaked in a thick forest of wordiness. That being said, it's hard to be wrong all the time! I'd be interested to hear what you think of Gabor Maté.

A Teller Mine consequence. I use the analogy of Albert Pierpoint often. The 13th Step is like the Scaffold. 13 knots, 13 steps, Boy meets girl on AA campus, boom the trap opens. You and your pelvic affiliate do not die a bodily death, or drink necessarily, but they are both at Step One.

In the 80s AA was thought to be the new EST. In the film The Player, Tim Robbins, pulls off the road, his in the glove box FAX machine goes off. Robbins checks his buds itinnerary. Yup AA that is where the deals are made.

People turn to alternatives like Rational Recovery, Read Books like "How AA let me down" SOS was big for a while for those who hated "God Shit" (Bob's story Emotions Anonymous). Yes friends lots of things happen on that "Last House on the Block". The Teller mine effect of the 13th Step, the bamboozlers who pull of long and short con. Ricky Reduntants. Psychopaths and Sociopaths trying to break the HARE scale. Zoom ensures Arms Length to some degree. I used to frolic in the Sunset District to get out of the Berkeley Bubble. I used to secretly smirk at back page ads for roommates with the stipulation NO 12 STEPPERS. Yet, yet, tonight I thought about what if I had a 8' x 8' bulletin board and put in a black push pin for each AA that I could not account for. Has the recidivism rate been quantified? It kills? I know of a case in which that happened. Personality Poisoning (CODEPENDENCY) is a result of the toxicity level in meetings, alano clubs, etc. Is AA narrow?

I think the amusing thing is that all the professionals I have met in the mental health industry , only the ones who are real alcoholics and have recovered have worked through the book as per the program of recovery described within the first 164 pages . I have never met non alcoholic mental health care professional who's worked through the book as described . Of course they don't understand , AA that's the whole point . One of my closest friends since childhood is the director of staff for one of the largest recovery companies in California . When he asked me for a book I offered to take him through the first 164 pages the way I would take another alcoholic and he laughed in my face. Hubris.

Interesting discussion however going from 'spontaneously depressed' to 'spontaneously not depressed'??? You can't very well do that if there are biological factors involved making you depressed. Plus it seems more like mindfulness to do REBT, not spontaneity. Agree, if you have practiced REBT and it has become ingrained/second nature you can become faster at making what looks like spontaneous decisions or actions.
