southpaw needs to work on footwork. Puts Feet together and has to reset too much. easier to hit that way and dont back straight up. Good coach and seems like a good place to learn

Hello! If you want to develop great punching combinations in sparring, be sure to study the '400 Boxing Combinations' practice guide. It's a great way to improve your skills and become more confident in the ring!

Nice head movement! Your right jabs are very effective especially given your range advantage. If you see him starting to guard your jabs more those are great moments to throw right hooks.

Wow. That guy looks like he knows how fight against south paw. Those left hooks are designed to throw you off because it's the side that's harder to defend as a south paw. I'd say, try to avoid moving right too much because you'd be stepping into those hooks. It seems like the moment he lands a clean left hook, he follows up with a cross. This is why it's good to have a good grasp on your fighting style and the pros and cons to it. That way you can come up with countermeasures against countermeasures. Also, near the end, he was watching and anticipating your jabs. Because of that, you got hit with a couple good crosses.
@ghawkb362 ай бұрын
Yeah, he's in advanced class with me and there is another South Paw he usually spars against. Coach tells me the same thing, I gotta move towards his jab hand to get lead foot position and stop dropping My guard
@gamrage2 ай бұрын
Good footwork. Weaving in and out without losing ground. Well played. I'd say work on your follow up combinations. You have a good jab, but it seems like you have trouble connecting follow up punches. 0:32, 1:39, 2:57 - For example, when you stand in south paw and throw a jab, your left body shot leaves your head completely open. 2:37 - Also, although your pressure was good, there were examples of you being weak to pressure as well. Your main tool is the jab to keep your opponent at bay, but once your opponent moves past that and they're in the range where you're at a disadvantage, and you ended up being backed up into the ropes. Looking at this, it appears you do well as an Out-Boxer and your opponent as an In-Fighter. The thing about In-Fighting is that they need to take risks to get in. You just need to keep them out, and wait for that chance to throw that hook or uppercut when they overextend. My other piece of advice would be to watch carefully how your opponent reacts to your jabs. Every reaction gives a read on their strategy, personality, and reflexes. From that, you can always formulate a plan of how to open them up. You can throw feints, time your jabs off rhythm, condition them to block specifically the head to go for body shots, or completely switch up your tactics on them.
@ghawkb362 ай бұрын
Thanks, for the advice I will make sure to think about it during practice and work on follow ups and feints. Also my guard needs to get a lot better. The kid I was going against was a year or 2 younger than me so I was trying not to accidentally hit him too hard.

If you join a gym and go to practice every day after 2 or 3 weeks you should be able to spar. You just need to have the basics down enough to where you won't get injured to spar.

I never understood why American boxing style teaches a tall guy ignore his height and reach advantage using hooks, slightly squatting and leaning forward exposing himself to a shorter guy's striking range.
@ghawkb364 ай бұрын
@@Levuppercut This was my first time sparring against these guys. It was pretty hard to figure out how to hit them, so a little bit of it is me leaning my head forward to try to get them to jab so I could get in range easier.
@ghawkb364 ай бұрын
Also, I've been sparring people older than me with longer arms for a long time so I'm used to being more aggressive to try to get in range.

american is a really broad term, america is huge and its style of boxing varies as if it’s a couple different countries. but tall guy could just be working on his weaknesses
@Levuppercut4 ай бұрын
@@BTboxingI can understand why amateurs may do it, but I have been puzzled to see American profys do it pretty often. Deontey Wilder, for example, being a giant throws hooks, instead of straights, slightly squats and leans forward, instead of standing up, engaging in medium distance range instead of keeping distance, gets punished, and then does it again. I have seen it over and over. I should admit that not all American tall profys do it, but the tendency was there. I don't remember seeing Brits do it, neither boxers from the former Soviet Union(which use slightly modified British style).
@BTboxing4 ай бұрын
@@Levuppercut there are many reasons to throw the hook, they are strong powerful shots, who’s main purpose is to obviate the guard or bring the guard around to the side so you can crack down center. tall or short there are reasons to do it
