You know at field trials most don't like this style of dogs. They think it's a race and the dogs should be fighting for the front. This is what we are always wanting in dogs.

At the complex. It was kind of crazy to see all those rabbits at that place. The dogs would run the rabbits out of the brush across the blacktop and mowed grass that was for trailor parking making it very difficult for the dogs. That place is huge.

How in the world do you judge these dogs? What are you looking for??
@mcardery2k28 күн бұрын
We were there just to observe the dogs. Some of those people were 90 years old with oxygen tanks who obviously loved dogs. I can honestly say I have no idea what they were looking for but at their age they had a passion for what they were doing. We go to all types of trials and try not to be down on guys because of what they run. They were obviously are enjoying what they are doing.

Why do they hunt so slowly? Is there something else bred into them to slow them down? Here in Ireland, the Begals are much faster. I'd go so far as to say Scotland, England, and Wales also.i don't want to offend you with this comment just very curious.
@mcardery2kАй бұрын
You do not offend me. These dogs are bred to run all the line. We have not had rain in two months so they will slow down to adjust to the tough scent ING. According to our AKC rules the dogs have to stay on the scent and only bark when on the line. If they over run where the rabbit turns and swing around leaving sectings of the part the rabbit ran then they will be picked up in a trial. It is just a different sport than what you are used to watching. You guys usually have a pack of dogs and the dogs are out in the open a lot and have lots of sight chases. I feel sure you catch a lot of rabbits. We run in very thick cover in places where the dogs have to craw through heavy briers & brush piles. I can understand when you are used to seeing dogs run like gray hounds that you would find it hard to understand the these dogs. It really is a thing of beating to hunt with these dogs and know that they can circle a rabbit for hours or until you shoot it. To get to see a rabbit double back on a track & a dog go to the end and understand the rabbit doubled back on its own track really is a thing of beauty. Just a different sport than what you are seeing. Here in the US you will see about every speed dog there is.

Joe, the simplest thing is to just use a plastic dog crate. That is what I used for years. I had the box I am using now in the back of my car that a guy built for me. The plastic crate worked just as good. I just strapped it down with tie downs. I put blocks of wood under it to make it level.

I don't know why everybody is in such a hurry. I tell everybody when Kyle Bush first started racing he was really fast but Everytime he came into a turn he crashed into the wall. Darrell Waltrip used to say sometimes you have to slow down to go fast. My dogs will go fast when the scent allows. I just can't show it most of the time because I am 73 and can't keep up.

Rabbits have become so scarce in our area that we have stopped breeding. Most guys are breeding for faster dogs today so it is tough to find medium speed dogs today. Best thing is to just watch videos on Facebook and maybe run across somebody who has this style dogs. I recommend buying a pups.

@@thonburino1 The Tortoise and the Hare" is a fable by Aesop that uses animals in human situations to teach a lesson. The story is about a hare who makes fun of a tortoise for being slow and challenges the tortoise to a race. The hare gets far ahead in the race, but then stops to take a nap. The tortoise keeps going slowly but steadily and wins the race. The moral of the story is that slow and steady wins the race.

What's impressive about this is what those dogs do on a check which makes a big difference as to whether they can hang on to the rabbit 🐇 or not. They started out by working close and gradually working out to get the line back. And they did manage to get the line back. That's a great 👍 example of how to do it as the rulebook states.
