“One of the most notable performances was by the Leningrad Radio Orchestra during the Siege of Leningrad. City leaders had ordered the orchestra to continue its performances to keep the spirits high in the city. On the night of October 20, 1941 they played Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 at the city's Philharmonic Hall and it was broadcast live to London. As the second movement began, bombs started to fall nearby, but the orchestra continued playing until the final note.” The fate of the world depends on the victory of Kamala Harris over Trump in the coming election.

I suspect that the first movement of this wonderful symphony was the inspiration for the main theme of StarWars.

Just relistened to this, in order to compare with Rattle's Prom with BRSO last night. Last night's (sudden?) ending came as something of a shock. I love the way Celibidache milks every last ounce of emotion/ power out of this work, especially the final 5 minutes.

Say what you want about the slow tempos and eccentricities, the cool thing about this performance is that there is no autopilot. Every measure, and there are lot of them, is meticulously considered and enjoyed, and the result really does have a mystical quality worthy of the legend. The tempos actually are not that slow--what actually happens is that every so often Celibidache slows things down, sometimes drastically, to widen the musical scope of the work, but the main tempo always resumes eventually. Ultimately it's a very vivid and deep understanding of the work.

Celibidache is a composer from Romania and the musicality he demonstrates as a conductor is similar to George Enescu. He has all the qualities of a genius conductor. For me it will live forever in my soul.

Bruckner, for me is a gient , like Bach, Beethoven and Wagner. His symphonies, are the best of bests. Full of sublime moments. Alos, i think, in future, say 300 years from now, he will be praised more than any other composer from romantic era.

I think there's a certain mystique surrounding Celibidache. I'm not sure where this, almost cult following of him came from or what validates him as some kind of "special" conductor? Just as an experiment I listened to this whole symphony on x1.25 speed to make this symphony sound a little more like other performances. I'm sorry but I don't understand his dynamics or structure? He seems to speed up and slow down at strange times. And he doesn't vary the dynamics of the timpani. He plays soft sections loudly and doesn't bring out climaxes very well. Celibidache was actually better in Brahms and Schubert than Bruckner. But that will never go down well with his fans. There's many better Bruckner contuctors out there, I think Celi seems to think that the slower the piece is played, the more impressive and grand it sounds...
