R is very often a vowel in both RP and General American Engliſh. Foꝛ ſome reaſon I do not ſee folks teaching this anywhere. It can be ſeen in woꝛds like woꝛd, church, bird, woꝛm, turn, nurſe, and earth. The Bittiſh and Americans ſay them differently, but they are both making an R ſound as they conceiue it. It is quite a different vowel than a ſchwa, though many often mong the two together.

I worked in a tech support role for 2 years, and ruined my voice by talking 8.5 hours a day helping users... Used to love singing, and was great at it, write my own music, but now cant sing as voice has been ruined... Would love to know if its possible to get back the control and warmth i used to have (voice breaks up easily now, has little to no range, and sounds very flat / thin, almost hurts to sing, total opposite to what it was before the job)... Really great vid, thanks for posting

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and for the kind words about the video! It sounds like your voice has been through a lot, but the good news is that with consistent care and the right exercises, you can often rebuild control, range, and warmth. One thing that might help is to shift the focus away from trying to get your voice back to how it was and instead explore what it can offer now. Voices change and adapt over time, and sometimes that can open up new possibilities. Start small with gentle warm-ups, prioritize hydration and vocal rest, and if it’s painful to sing, it might be worth consulting a voice specialist or speech therapist. Your voice is resilient, and I’m confident you can rediscover its potential. Let me know if there’s anything specific I can help with!

Molly, why do most Brits say the word necessary in the General American accent, but keep the words stationery, secretary, and blueberry in the RP accent?

Hey James- great point and question! I think that’s simply one of those words which is in a state of flux. Sometimes it will be 4 syllables, otherwise it may be 3. I think it’s always helpful to accent there can be two ways of being correct, so what helps the emphasis and stress you’re trying to make :)

There's not just one Welsh accent no more than there is just one English accent; the Welsh accents (plural) vary from north to south, east to west. To state that there is a "Welsh accent" is mere cliché.

Very little difference both charming . I am British so I get warmer vibes from the RP ( Received Pronunciation West London ) but US people may think it sounds snobby reminiscent of red coat traitors and every evil genius on US sci-fi films . Sorry, a lot to unpack there.

Someone I worked with is Bi-dialectal, she was born in Scotland and moved down to the south of England when she was 12, she speaks with a southern English accent, but when she goes back to Scotland or when she wants to she will speak with a strong Scottish accent! And she can switch effortlessly between both if she wants to!

"The Gold Star" is as usefull as it can be dangerous as it can deteriorate i.e. into doublespeak. I've experienced it as mostly just a heads-up for something negative and then I automatically assume it's either a lie or it is stated in a way denying the intent or meaning of a statement, while the same statement is then made anyway, with lots of hot air produced. People tend to forget not to couple something positive with a "but". So, great video, thank you! Now I'm not trying to be preachy or anything by saying you should have mentioned that aspect but it would have been a good idea. :D

Hi Molly, I am not sure if you will see this comment. I am a foreign speaker learning British accent and recently I am a fond of heightened RP and Theresa May’s accent. Could I ask if Theresa May’s accent is a form of Heightened RP rather than modern RP?

@ But I noticed, despite minimum movement with her mouth (being the funnel), Theresa May most of the time are still pronouncing words based on Modern RP rules like ‘djuring’ ‘Choosday’ ‘and ‘hAnd’ instead of. ‘hEnd’. In this case, can I conclude she is speaking modern RP while retaining some heightened RP intonation and features?
@mollypvoiceaccentcoach
@mollypvoiceaccentcoach Ай бұрын
@@channicholas8908 Yes! Something that helps me is think of RP as a family of accents. There are some aspects and habits that are passed and common between them that get stronger and weaker depending on context. So to say anyone only has a heightened RP or Modern is tricky, instead you can think of May's accent as leaning towards more heightened :)
@mollypvoiceaccentcoach
@mollypvoiceaccentcoach Ай бұрын
Also- the hend/hand would be what I'd class as Royal RP not heightened!

I was curious about something. Do you think that if a person has a particular heritage that is in their DNA that it's possible for them to affect that dialect? Say for instance If someone was born in the United States and did a DNA test that said that they were a large percentage of European English or Scottish for example. Would they be able to replicate that dialect, maybe because it is an innate part of their genetic makeup?
