I intend to return to it soon. Just had so much going on. The recording is supposed to pause when selecting a wave. Then when deselecting it unpauses. This way what you have selected in the buffer is guaranteed to remain in the buffer until you have finished with it.

@jamescuttsmusicjcm501322 күн бұрын
For quite a while now I have been sticking to minimising the amount of overdubs in my tracks. Trying to do more with less. The goal with this one when I started it was to try and make one guitar sound like two in the chorus by running it through two rigs - one clean amp rig, and one driven with wah. Doublers on their own have a sound, and that sound can be great don't get me wrong. But I wanted something that had the spankiness of clean, with the heaviness of distortion. It is a mixture of tones that I have been trying to glue together for awhile with varying degrees of success each time. Sometimes the clean pokes through too much and makes the distortion sound wimpy, sometimes the heaviness buries the clean entirely. But this time... I'd call it a success, but I mean... come on... let's face it. No matter how much I would like not to be in this instance... I am biased AF. So... I will leave it up to you to decide. There are potentially lead guitar parts missing... they are unimportant at this stage. Would like to work around the vocals so I will revisit all that later.

The level of quality has changed over time here for the better in my opinion, and it makes my older official tracks seem terrible to be quite honest by comparison - at least by how I imagined them originally. They have their moments of clarity. Lol. But I couldn't ever get them to a level that I was happy with. (Edit: This track was recorded in the sort of murky in-between so I will improve and extend it later but it is generally okay to release now - see video description). They [the older tracks] were recorded with really basic stuff and it took a lot of work to even get them that presentable. However through that torture, with better equipment and things I have been able to elevate the quality substantially and with ease by comparison. So I will be at a later date re-releasing my more popular tracks. I will probably find some sort of way to accompany them with performance videos or something. I dunno I haven't worked out those sort of details yet. Anyway it will have to wait for the time being as I just have so much on in the background. It is a nightmare relived each day in a kind of groundhog day fashion right now. Honestly... it is hellish. Btw... while I am generally against excessive hiss and raw guitar noise, this is NOT a hiss / noise free zone. Sometimes it is a thing. Think of this release as one of them cool old bootlegs. Rofl. Nah but seriously, I will be toning it down in this particular track when I approach it later on for a proper release. Right now it is as it is. Tis what it is ey folks. Tis what it is. But it is out there. It is a thing. You know it! I know it! We all know it. Don't we? Bwahahaa! Damn right we do peeps. Damn right we do!

People with "Perfect Pitch" might struggle with this type of music more than most. It is a terrible affliction to be honest. Mostly because it is only really perfect in one way isn't it? That doesn't particularly strike me as very "perfect" but I will... play along. Haha. Hey I am just kidding. There are things I struggle with in any temperament, and any EDO. Nothing is perfect, you can either get over it or let it ruin your life - as a guitarist it used to particularly bother me because guitars are even shakier on that ground when it really comes down to it. Long ago I wasted forever in time in the background trying to get all notes to resonate perfectly and as I got older and more experienced I realised that it was never going to ever be perfect. And that there is no perfect, everything is relative to everything else. There is better and worse only when it comes to guitar intonation. That is before we even start to go over the struggles of equal temperament tunings which are also fundamentally flawed (if we are seeking "perfection"). Regarding 22-EDO specifically though... to be honest I am not quite yet at the bottom of harnessing it fully yet. I ran out of time while making this piece and the microtonal rabbit hole is one hell of a deep dive. So I will be returning to and experimenting with this track in the future. There are parts that I consider just a little too.... "textured". The question is... how much can be remedied and what is a real "fault", and not just a feature of 22-EDO? To be continued...
@jamescuttsmusicjcm5013 Жыл бұрын
It is funny actually. When I first started playing guitar and progressed to a point where I could play barre chords. I would deliberately avoid all 7ths and 9ths and every extension because I hated the colour tones and how they clashed against the rest of the harmonics. I wanted perfect resonance and clarity. Haha. It is embarrassing now looking back but... damn... I never did perfect those harmonics. Smh. EDIT: It is worth noting that literally nothing on that guitar rang nice and true, the more notes I would add, the worse it would get. Haha. But even when I got a better guitar I still couldn't get over certain extensions and would avoid them at first, but you learn how to use things. That is the case with this microtonal stuff. There is much to learn but so much potential power. Ohhhh baby.

I keep thinking I can hear other things in the background but I am not sure I really can. When it goes to the quiet bit at the end, in my headphones I think I can hear a door creek? There is stuff all over it. Are there voices in this? It is tripping me out and the feeling of impending doom some parts of this give me reminds me of 28 days later which is super cool. Oh and I love that doppler shifting drop at the end. Sounds like an ambulance or a truck or something has drove past while I was deep in thought and not really thinking about it. Oh and it is the end that reminds me of 28 days in the way it brings doom.

I love 22-TET to be honest, but there are a few things about it that bother me. I ran out of time and had to leave it for now, and so I have decided that I will revisit this track and try some more techniques and I may make some videos about microtones and my approach to using them and different tunings / temperaments. While I love the textural beating of some of the tonal colours that I can access with 22-TET, I would like to tone it back a little at times so it is a little less "gratey". Too gratey is too much texture haha. But it does have a sort of tripped out kind of ethereal vibe to it. Which I do like a lot.

@jamescuttsmusicjcm5013 Жыл бұрын
It will be coming. I am still working on it, just pretty busy with stuff. Still... I have when possible been taking some time to use ScratchBuffer myself in my productions and have been rolling together some ideas of ways to improve it further. Not just regarding the coming MIDI stuff but also for the audio side of it too. Usability things really. For example I would like to make it easier to line stuff up in the DAW when you drag things out - this is particularly useful if you are using slow attack sounds such as Pad sounds. At the moment you can feed a click into it like a bar before the section for example, and then you have a marker which after placement you can crop off, but... it introduces the niggling need to have to FAFF around and breaks the fast workflow. This is also problematic if you want to use multiple ScratchBuffer instances at different points in a chain since the click might be smothered in say... an auxillery tracks 100% wet reverb. But on the other hand there's also the best way to display midi stuff compactly which I have been pondering over. Yea... I have put down a lot of the ground work and I intend to return to it soon, but there are just some things that need a bit of a chunk of time to think about good/efficient solutions for. Bear with me.

It is just the piano at the end. It has enough harmonic content in the sound of a piano that it can approximately mimic speech. At least, convincingly enough that your brain can do the rest after hearing what was spoken beforehand. It is pretty awesome really.

I will say this though, it isn't so much about the vital preset, as it is about what is being done to it later in the chain. The preset is actually a (probably modified) version of another preset that comes with Vital. I say probably because I saved it as a fork of the original preset with the idea of changing a few things for testing stuff out ages ago and I cannot remember exactly.
