Summerall and Madden, you knew it was gonna be a big game. I miss announcers that don't scream all the time. Those Bears were pretty good but the Niners, wow! Montana just carved up the blitz.

Still very stunning how Lombardi turned a 1 win team from 1958 into a major success instantly.

I remember watching this game live. Man was this a masterclass by the Bears Defense. It's insane how good that played this game.

if only they gave Rex protection and more weapons... I'm not saying he's a HoFamer - but very likely would have put the Bears' legacy of ineptitude at the QB position to rest.

Shit so scripted but it was better to watch back then. They could hit. I had this game on dvd yrs ago and remember watching live. It was one of the best games as a Bear fan to watch. Tillman and Briggs were absolutely everywhere. Bobby Gray was an absolute beast and made his namesake on that Sharpe hit. Amazing. I remember watching Bobby Blow his knee out in agony in a later game and that was his career. I would say that Bears secondary was one of the greatest ever and that means a ton. Mike Brown was one of my favorites and a huge hitter.

Buddy Ryan already had the defense set and that team was stuck at 6 wins. They needed much better QB play, better receivers. Enter McMahon, Gault,McKinnon in 82. Ditka got the passing game turned around and they drafted better linemen for Walter Payton. The Bears led the NFL in rushing from.1983 to 88 and again in 1990. Payton had some of his best seasons after Ditka had established some balance in the offense. McMahon was a top 10 QB and the Bears were top 10 in passing; not impressive until you realize the Bears were a bottom feeding passing team for over 2 decades. Payton had a difficult 1981 averaging only 3.6 a carry. Too much of the offensive burden fell on Payton. Ditka deserves credit for fixing a broken offense as much as Buddy Ryan deserves credit for molding a dominant defense
