One of the reasons the Sopranos is the best show in TV is how they were able to demonstrate the characters’ understanding of complex concepts by explaining them using vernacular that’s germane to what makes sense for the characters. This is unironically a pretty good take on what purgatory actually is to us Catholics.

People make fun of the finale where it just fades to black, but that's meant to be the eternal darkness into which the characters descend. This is presaged by several of supernatural manifestations throughout the series, including a vision of the Virgin Mary had by Paulie.

50 yrs for a single mortal sin.... Pauly needs a better attorney...what about good behavior? And like Pauly could do 6000 years without getting into more trouble in Purgatory... Is there Max Security Purgatory? If Pauly has to go 50 years in between shanking fellow inmates, he wouldn't ever gain on time to serve and would be stuck in Purgatory forever...

Do the math: If Paulie dodged the pissant venial stuff, 6,000 years would be 120 rats (and his mom's best friend) at 50 years a pop.

Christopher is the only one we get to see really struggle with their sins. Tony struggles with a lot, but its all personal matters like family or outside problems like the law and other mobsters. Tony tells himself he's a soldier, and soldiers dont go to hell for killing, and Paulie has this warped idea that he'll get to heaven through purgatory, but Christopher seems to understand that he's going to hell for what he's done.

the thought of an immortal afterlife is so ridiculous, what sick god would torture someone for living a sinful life for 80 years with infinite torture? infinite, infinity is longer than the universe beginning and ending billions of billions of billions of times, infinitely longer, no way a loving god would do that
