Former teacher here who quit the profession twice. I watch this video and it was only towards the end. When I realize this was filmed in 2018, before the pandemic. So the pandemic made these issues even worse than he says. Good luck and Godspeed to all those out there and braving it in the classroom.

Chris, you have inspired me to look up some mill history from a town I grew up in, Chico Ca. Early history in northern CA involved lots of lumber mills. Forests were regularly logged and logs driven to lumber mills for processing. The grammar school I walked to in the 60's was near one that was long since shut down, but kids still went there to goof around. It was interesting. Karla in Cali.

Sadly most of the mills closed down in my state, very few left, it was good jobs for whole generations. When they close it can devastate the whole town, taxes, small businesses, restaurants.

I love these old memories. Our town’s backbone was (and still is) a paper mill. It was first established in 1846 and remarkably is still going strong. My dad worked for Mead Paper. In those days you could go to work there, put in your years, and at the end of your working years, you drew a retirement pension directly from the company…. No 401s or self investing like we have to do today…. Something you didn’t have to think about. Life was so simple. I remember as a kid when talks of a “strike” would bring terror to our hearts. Not only would loss of income affect your family, but the entire community of small businesses because the Mill was the source of income for so so many families and the trickle down of people with not as much to spend would affect the entire community. People sometimes joke about the odor that paper making produces, but employees say it is the smell of money. The Mill has expanded, sized down, and went through many name changes with buyouts through the years, but it is still manufacturing paper and a profitable strong backbone to our area, along with all the numerous new plants and businesses that have found their way here. Dad would be pleased to know that now his granddaughter is an employee there, 3 generations later.

Thanks for the memories. I grew up in a little town in north Alabama,Carbon Hill. We had an Arrow shirt factory and before that we had a coal mine on each end of town. We had one Dr and he made house calls. My uncle was the barber. Yes, your video took me back to my childhood. Thanks.

Oh, how I remember all those federal and state regulations for testing. As an example, a student threw up all over a state test document. Could we throw that stinky, gross thing away in the trash? No. We had to put it in a plastic bag and return it with all of our testing documents. If we were one test short, we were in violation of laws. So ridiculous. Bureaucrats have no common sense.
